The Buzz in the Speaking Industry
You've probably noticed the buzz going on in the speaking industry. And it's true.
More groups are planning in-person events more than ever.
Conferences are ramping up to make up for lost time and they need good content and good speakers.
Inbound requests are starting to come in and speakers are having to decide to do virtual or in-person. Others are jumping at the idea of getting on a real stage again!
If you are seeing all this happening but feeling like you are getting left behind, I got a hint for you.
The reason people aren't reaching out to you is simple.
1) Exposure
(they don't know you exist)
2) Clarity
(believe it or not, this is the biggest problem I'm seeing now. Speakers can explain what they do but NOT what problem they solve. When you are clear on the problem you solve and it's a problem your audience has... Inbound leads start coming in)
3) Market/Message Fit
(You may have a great message but if your market doesn't have a budget for it, you are S.O.L. You want to match our message to what the market is already interested in. You don't have to change your message, just present it as the vehicle to help your audience achieve the goals they already care about)
I see these problems all the time and they are simple to fix in most cases, it's just that you may be too close to the trees to see the forest.
When you are clear on those three items you can craft a signature keynote that people want to book. I promise you, if you can figure these three things out and can structure your presentation in a way that creates results (most people think they can but if you are building word of mouth referral business at a high rate, that means something is off).
Here's the cold hard truth (don't hate me).
If you are having to do a TON of cold calling, it's because your keynote isn't dialed in enough. It's true.
You ever notice the BEST speakers in the industry always answer damn near the same way when asked: "How are you booking so many events?"
You know what the biggest answer is? Word-of-Mouth.
In the beginning of my career, I HATED this answer. I'm like c'mon man, spill the beans.
But here's what most people are missing in my humble opinion. When you have a dialed in message and you get it in front of "Pregnant pet" audiences. (If you don't know what a pregnant pet presentation is search that on my youtube channel) The word-of-mouth is wild.
Because what I promise you, if you want to get paid high fees, you aren't cold calling 100 people a day.
A good presentation delivered in front of the right audience is all you need.
Of course you can do other things but in the behind closed door conversations I have with the great ones. They all focus on this one stragey. Give a signature talk to a pregnant pet audience.
That's the 80/20 rule of successful speakers.
Here's the cold water in you face (doing this by your side to help you). If people come up to you after your presentation and tell you "you did a good job" that means nothing. It's called the "Pity Award".
If people come up to you and ask "How can I get you to speak at X,Y,Z event or I need you to connect with so-and-so because they need to book you" then you know you have the right signature talk.
If your presentation isn't doing that, then you just need to make some tweaks that isn't about getting new information per se but repackaging it.
Most speakers just get on stage and start riffing. And granted, that's better than most people who have stage fright.
But if you want to see incredible results and have people reaching out to you and spreading the word about you, you need to dial in your signature talk and your pregnant pet audiences.
If you need help with that, feel free to post a question or shoot me a dm if you prefer privacy and I'll do my best to answer any questions you have about this.
