Buyers’ agents: Getting back your work mojo

After a break, especially a longer break that most of us take over Christmas and New Year, it’s sometimes hard to get back into the regular routine of work. We lack motivation and the idea of getting back on the treadmill fills us with dread.
It isn’t easy. I know. The trick is to find renewed enthusiasm and get excited about the possibilities of your business. So here are my top tips on how to get your work mojo back.
Start planning
1. Holidays and breaks
Forget the new year resolutions unless they involve having more fun. I’ve found it’s helpful to schedule regular holiday breaks over the year. In our industry, it’s too easy to let work spill over into every weekend and evening. And that’s a sure-fire route to burnout land. So get out your calendar and block out holiday times. You can always move them if needed but try to actually book accommodation or activities so you’re more likely to stick to them.
2. Ideal clients
We all have the ideal client; they’re the ones we know we empathise with the most and are supremely confident of helping. So start planning how you’ll attract more of those ideal clients. You might need to do some cold calling, or network more, or hold an event that should attract those clients. You want to feel a sense of excitement and that you’re taking control of your destiny.
3. Everyday work life
To get started on your day-to-day work life, you might like to plan your ideal work day. Naturally, with our line of work as buyers’ agents, the standard work day doesn’t really exist and flexibility is a must, but we have certain processes we need to use for each client.
Understand what makes you stressed
We all get stressed or live with a general feeling of anxiety that, if left unchecked, can be debilitating. So instead of living with continual stress that is stopping you from being your best self, sit down with a pen or pencil and a piece of paper and write down what makes you stressed. The physical act of writing is important so don’t cheat and use your laptop, phone or tablet. Captain of industry, Lee Iacocca, noted,?“The discipline of writing something down is the first step toward making it happen,” so don’t skip this bit.
Once you’ve written a list of what or who causes you stress, you can analyse and understand why these people or activities are stress-inducing and take action.
Top tip
We can’t always get rid of a situation or person who causes us to feel anxious. However, this simple exercise can help you reset your body by resetting your vagus nerve.
What is the vagus nerve?
The vagus nerve, beginning in the brain stem and extending to the abdomen, carries an extensive range of signals from your digestive system and organs to the brain and vice versa. If you’ve ever heard that your gut is your ‘second brain’, you’ll understand why resetting this nerve can help with stress.
The reset exercise
Put your left hand flat on your head. Tip your left ear to your left shoulder. Swivel your eyes to the 9 o’clock position (that is, your eyes should be directed to the side of your raised shoulder). Repeat for the right side. How long do you need to do this? Well, it’s probably easier in the beginning to mentally count to 40. However, you’ll know you have it right when you yawn or sigh. It means the vagus nerve has relaxed. Depending on your level of stress, you might want to repeat this every day. As you improve, you might need to perform this exercise once a month as a tune-up.
