In addition, Fulton County is known for being home to AT&T, Coca-Cola, Georgia-Pacific, United Parcel Service, and many others. It was in 1980, that the first around-the-clock news service was born, by Ted Turner, when he bought CNN, a news broadcasting service.

Also, it was during the summer of 1996 that Fulton County hosted the Olympics. Unfortunately, it was also during that time, when a domestic terrorist pipe bomb was set off in Centennial Park, killing 2 and wounding 11 others. The perpetrator was caught and sentenced.?

It also was home to Civil Rights Leader, Martin Luther King, Jr., authors Margaret Mitchell (Gone With The Wind) and Anne Rivers Siddons, golfer Bobby Jones, and Helen Douglas Mankin, who was the first US congresswoman from Georgia.?

In addition to notable people, Fulton County is home to several colleges and universities, including the Georgia Institute of Technology (more commonly known as GA Tech with a yellow jacket mascot), Georgia State University, and Atlanta University Center.

Name History

Fulton County was originally thought to be named after Robert Fulton, but that information was incorrect. According to the New Georgia Encyclopedia, Fulton County was named after Hamilton Fulton, the chief engineer of Georgia, and who was a land surveyor. He also convinced the state officials that it would be more important to build a railroad, and not a canal, to link several locations together. In fact, it was the railroad that played an important part during the Civil War.?

Fulton County Demographics

According to the 2020 census, Fulton County(GA) is the most populated county, with about 1,066,710 people. It also boasts of 15 cities and can be broken down as: 79% is voting age, 42.5% is Black, 39.3% is White, 8.7% is Asian, 8.1% is Hispanic/Latino, 7.4% is another race, including Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, and 1.4% is American Indian or Native Alaskan.

In Fulton County, there are more females (51.60%), whose median age is 36.5, than males (48.40%), whose median age is 34.4, and the total median age is 35.5. In addition, the census showed that there are 87.42% who are white-collar workers, while there are 12.58% who are blue-collar workers. As well, studies show that more people haven’t gotten married (42.9%) as opposed to those who are married (40.48%). Education is somewhat important in Fulton County, with 19.44% holding a graduate degree, and only 29.85% holding a bachelor’s degree.?
