The Butterfly Effect

The Butterfly Effect

When I was in Junior High School I was part of band. I played clarinet in our concert band, and I was a Letterette in our marching band. What does all this mean?... A LOT OF FUNDRAISING. And a LOT OF WORK!

We had uniforms to pay for as well as school busses to travel in and entry fees for various competitions. What we didn’t realize was we were learning sales, and entrepreneurship. If we didn’t raise the money, we didn’t get to do all we wanted to do. Candybars, car washes, bake sales... you name it, we likely did it.

In addition to fundraising… we practiced... and practiced… Not until perfect, but until we were at our best... then we practiced more. And you know what? Our hours upon hours of practice paid off. We often beat high schools in competition. Our 7th, 8th and 9th grade band was better than most 10th, 11th and 12th grade bands. Why... because we WORKED!

What did this do for me? I learned I have to do what I have to do in order to get what I want. I also learned that practicing for hours a day to do my best will give me the results I want.  Life has changed a bit. I have learned to work smart rather than hard. However, when launching a project I know the work hours and time dedication will be more than once the project is up and running. But the groundwork pays off.

What lessons did you learn as a youngster that continue to guide you now? My bandmates and I thought Mr. Robert Campbell, our band teacher, was just teaching us band… but, oh, he taught us so much more. I am grateful for Mr. Campbell. His lessons have an infinite butterfly effect.

What has been one of your butterfly effects?

Let’s engage in the comments. I’ll go first and share one of mine.

I attended the camp Anytown between my junior and senior year of high school. It was such as amazing experience, I sent my son when he was in high school. A few years later, I went back as an adult a few times as an advisor. During my time as an advisor, I had an opportunity to mentor youth and facilitate group sessions. One of those sessions we talked about family dynamics. There was a lot of emotion on that day… and a lot of breakthroughs. I am sure that the natural healing that occurred that day has had a positive effect that has rippled too many times to ever count. I am thankful and honored to be the facilitator of that group, and thankful for being trusted with their stories.
