Buteyko Breathing Method: The key to Functional Dentistry

Buteyko Breathing Method: The key to Functional Dentistry

Its not uncommon to believe that “Breathing is Natural”. It just happens and there is nothing we need to care about. “Breathing is natural” but “Act of Breathing” is an Art that contributes to better living.

Buteyko Breathing method originated in Russia and travelled a major part of the globe teaching and training people about the right methods of breathing which can then allow the normal growth of jaws in children and hence promote the better alignment of the teeth. There are six major exercises in Buteyko Method that can be inculcated as lifestyle not only for children but for adults as well.

In current times, It is more acceptable to use the term “Breathing Re-education” as it diversifies into health and general lifestyle manner. Slow inhalations, prolonged exhalations, followed by a pause is indeed an art of slow breathing that keeps our body increasingly chemosensitive to Carbon Dioxide. This increased sensitivity to Carbon Dioxide is desirable to increase the amount of Oxygenation in the blood cells. A well Breathed Body is healthy and active; and a well Breathed Mind is more alert and focused.

This re education lays quite a lot emphasis on Nasal breathing which then restores tongue at the right position in the roof of the mouth thereby stabilizing upper jaw growth and hence avoiding crowding of teeth and restricted jaw growth.

Breathing re education not only upgrades the knowledge but also entitles us to be called as “Functional Dentist”. In the designated profile of functional dentist, Myobrace myofunctional therapy can be better incorporated as it gets well supported by breathing exercises. Better breathing techniques will help strengthen the facial and oral muscles, hence allowing dentition to be balanced and stay in alignment.
