The alarm goes off, and we jump out of bed, rushing into the flurry of the day. Our minds already begin racing as we mentally prepare for the tasks ahead. But pause for a moment: what we do next can determine the tone for our entire day. Have you ever thought about how you’re starting and ending your day? What are your top priorities? Do you often find yourself asking, “Am I busy, or am I being productive in a meaningful way?”
In today’s world, busyness has become a badge of honor. It feels good—it’s exhilarating. Checking off items on our to-do list brings a rush of satisfaction, a surge of endorphins that makes us feel accomplished. I know that feeling well; I’ve always loved to plan, and even more, I was driven to see those plans through. But somewhere along the way, I learned an important truth: there’s a difference between being busy and being productive. And, more importantly, there’s a way to slow down, hear the voice of Jesus, and let Him guide our daily activities.
What Is Busyness Really Doing to Us?
Our society celebrates being busy, but how does it actually affect us? When we’re constantly running from task to task, our brains shift into overdrive. We feel the pressure of deadlines, expectations, and the need to accomplish more. While it might feel rewarding initially, over time, this constant busyness wears us down. It increases stress, diminishes our joy, and can negatively impact our mood, health, and relationships. We might check off tasks, but are we actually making room for what truly matters?
Jesus invites us to step away from this cycle. He knows the best use of the 24 hours He’s given us. If we’re truly surrendered to Him and His plans, we can trust Him to guide our daily tasks in a way that’s not just productive but purposeful.
Busy vs. Productive: Following Jesus' Instruction
The difference between being busy and being productive lies in purpose. Busyness can be chaotic, aimless, and draining. It’s activity for activity’s sake. Productivity, on the other hand, is focused and intentional—it’s the kind of action that follows the specific instructions Jesus gives us. Proverbs 16:9 reminds us, “In their hearts, humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.”
When we learn to slow down and seek His voice, we shift from a hectic, scattered schedule to a life of purpose-driven production. Jesus knows the most meaningful ways to spend our time. He can help us prioritize what matters most, creating balance, peace, and joy as we live according to His guidance.
How to Slow Down and Hear the Voice of Jesus
Slowing down might seem counterproductive—especially in a world that values constant movement—but it’s essential if we want to discern Jesus’ voice and follow His lead. The process of slowing down helps clear the mental and spiritual clutter that keeps us from hearing clearly. Here are some simple, but often overlooked, ways to create space for clarity and spiritual direction:

What Happens When We Slow Down?
When we make space in our lives to listen to Jesus, something powerful happens: clarity replaces chaos. The noise and busyness fade away, and we’re able to discern His direction for our day. Instead of rushing from task to task, we move with purpose, guided by His wisdom. The tasks we engage in become infused with meaning because they’re done in obedience to Him.
Busyness often leads to burnout, but purposeful productivity leads to peace. When we follow Jesus’ instructions, our work becomes more fruitful, our relationships grow stronger, and our joy deepens. It’s not about doing more; it’s about doing what matters most in alignment with God’s will.
How to Find Meaning in Purposeful Production
Reflection Questions:
Prayer:
Lord, I surrender my day and my to-do list to You. Help me to discern between the busyness of life and the purposeful productivity that comes from following Your voice. Teach me to slow down, listen, and trust You with my time. Guide me in all my tasks, so that everything I do brings glory to You and has lasting value. In Jesus' name, Amen.
By embracing a life of purpose over busyness, we can transform our days from a whirlwind of tasks to a journey of meaningful, productive living—one guided by the voice of Jesus.
