Busting the Sector Myth

Welcome to our 4K Subscribers and it's been a whirlwind few days at Finance Transformation Consulting as we launched BUSREQ our new Business Requirements Solution which is Sector, Function and System Agnostic. I was particularly pleased that Mark Saywell joined me in Dublin to launch it with a private viewing for several Business Leaders.

We then recorded our Webinar to answer all your questions about BUSREQ which you can view on the new website and you too can Unlock the Keys to Program Success.

For as long as I can remember there has been the nonsense propagated in certain quarters that you require Sector experience to run or transform a Finance Function or any Business Back Office Function for that matter. This leads to many unnecessary knock on effects and is entirely driven by a lack of understanding of what Consulting services and skillsets are within the Recruitment Market.

BUSREQ is a pure Consulting skillset, you need to know what Question to ask, of whom, by what method or approach and when to ask it. It has nothing to do with the Sector. On Friday I launched the Newsletter Program Manager to explain quite clearly the Laws of Change, Change being a non Sector specific skill. You can Subscribe here for the other 11 Laws as they are released. Subscribe to Newsletter Program Manager.

The Laws of Change - Law No. 1 'Know Thyself'

Please read on:

Welcome to my new Newsletter devoted to helping you start and finish a Change Program. It is Function, System and Sector Agnostic. These are my Top Tips, the Tools of the Trade if you like to become a successful Program Manager.

I hail from the Finance faction yet have spent my entire career talking about Finance to non Finance people. I do not mind where you hail from, Procurement, IT, Customer Service, Marketing, Manufacturing, HR or those brave souls who define themselves by the initials PMO but I will tolerate no dissenters, no 'splitters' from the main Gospel of Change. It is, to the devoted, a Religion!

Here we believe in the skillset, the experience, the inner belief and we brook no silly talk of Sector experience, that is for the weak minded and inexperienced. We are the ones who get things done, we take blueprints and apply the necessary blood, sweat and tears. If this is you then welcome aboard and lets set sail to our own particular brand of Paradise where Milestones are met and nobody believes the User knows best.

I will deploy my legendary sense of humour as appropriate and it is up to you to determine what is fact and what is fiction, but if you are a true adherent to the Laws of Change, then you are in the right place.

What are these Laws of Change that are inviolate to Program Managers I hear you say. The Laws of Change define us, what we do and how we do it. They are the 12 greatest Laws in the history of mankind and they are not to be altered or have their Scope revised, they are set in stone. They are, quite simply, the Law.

Here I will talk not of Finance, IT, HR or Procurement here we only talk of what you must do. The Situation, the Business, the Sector, the System and the Specialism are irrelevant and for those of limited life experience and career exposure. This is the way for all who hold Program Management to their hearts and deep in their souls.

The first Law of Change is Know Thyself!

It is not as many have speculated to know the Exam Question, the Problem Statement or Raison D'etre or your Program or your Business. It is first and foremost to have looked deep within your motivations, your experiences and your desires to determine YOUR WHY.

Do not come to Program Management as a career notch on your belt, box tick to being a C Suite(r) or because you think your good. You make sure you know your WHY, before you start to craft the life changing impact of Program Management to others.

Program Managers don't just alter Businesses they alter lives, be very clear on why you have chosen this path or find another one. Here 'endeth' the lesson and tune in next week for Law No. 2.

Best Regards,

Michael Ryan
