Busting myths about the low-carb diet

At work, I recommend many of my patients follow a low-carb diet to treat type 2 diabetes. And it's shown numerous benefits with respect to weight, insulin dosages, medication, and metabolism.

Yet, I come across at least five people every week who tout against this diet.

Low Carb Nutrition has a high safety profile as proven over multiple studies.

So here's my attempt at busting some myths. Don't believe the following with respect to low-carb diet: ?

1. Dietary Fat is your enemy.

2. The brain cannot do without carbs.

3. You get nutrient deficiencies on a low-carb diet.

4. Low carb can damage your kidneys.

5. Low carb causes permanent hair loss.

6. A low-carb diet will cause a long-term increase in unhealthy cholesterol.

7. A low-carb diet will damage your thyroid.

8. Low carb is bad for exercise.

9. You can get osteoporosis on low carb.

10. Low carb is bad for your gut bacteria.

Please note that a low-carb diet isn't something you can embark upon by yourself. It requires medical supervision and should be done with an experienced healthcare team.?

"Reducing overall carbohydrate intake for individuals with Diabetes has demonstrated the most evidence for improving glycemia and may be applied in a variety of eating patterns that meet individual needs and preferences"- American Diabetes Association, 2019.
