For businesses, why does the new ChatGPT matter?
AI is here to stay, and leading the way is ChatGPT. It's many professionals' default chatbot for generating copy, scanning reports and even producing code. This past week the minds behind the system showcased the latest version of the platform, GPT-4o which promises new features galore. Google's largest developer conference, Google I/O has also just closed. With both these events - there are a lot of new features that businesses at the start-up, SME level and beyond can use. In this article, we'll be taking a look at some of the pieces you can make the most of.
OpenAI has built upon the features of GPT-4, the subscription-only AI chatbot. In demos of the system, the AI has advanced emotional cues, human-like reactions and can hold more natural conversations. Chat GPT also now reckons with humanity's most difficult task, flirting. When told how amazing it is, the bot now replies along the lines of “Oh stop it, you’re making me blush", adding a little more personality to what can be a distinctly robotic system.
With these bots becoming more and more advanced, AI is on a clear path to do great things. So far we’ve seen implementations in two primary ways – chatbots, including advanced companion systems, and those in a business context that use machine learning to accelerate processes.
Importantly, the system can now combine information across input from video, imagery and audio.
The new GPT 4-o will be available for free to all users, both through the current website and a new desktop app. It responds on average to inputs in 320 milliseconds to text, audio and imagery. These speed improvements apply to all of Chat GPT including the API that many developers use to incorporate the technology into their platform or software.
Writing on his blog, Chat GPT CEO, Sam Altman said: “First, a key part of our mission is to put very capable AI tools in the hands of people for free (or at a great price). I am very proud that we’ve made the best model in the world available for free in ChatGPT, without ads or anything like that.
“Second, the new voice (and video) mode is the best computer interface I’ve ever used. It feels like AI from the movies; and it’s still a bit surprising to me that it’s real. Getting to human-level response times and expressiveness turns out to be a big change.”
With these speed improvements and the ability to combine input types, ChatGPT is becoming a force to be reckoned with when producing reports and gaining insights.
What was announced at Google I/O?

The advancements at Chat GPT aren’t the only ones this week. Google’s developer conference I/O went ahead, where the company made over 100 announcements largely relating to their AI projects at DeepMind. Google is launching a series of new and improved generative AIs for both image and video.
Most interestingly they unveiled Project Astra, their entry into the AI personal assistant space. In their demo of the tech, they recognised everything from components of a speaker, recognition of abstract ideas from a diagram of Schrodinger’s cat and provided advice in software programming.
With these advancements coming in the technology, businesses need to be considering where they can leverage this within their work. Be that through the acceleration of menial tasks, interactions with customers or assisting in the production of work in professional services.
