Are you developing enough 'Change?Agents' in the business/organisation to support/execute new change initiatives?

Numerous studies have shown that employees tend instinctively to oppose change initiatives because they disrupt established power structures and ways of getting things done. Consider John, who wanted to set up an automated onboarding process for new employees, that would free up time for the People and Cultures Team and the key Managers - in different locations. Although John was a senior leader, he had joined the business less than a year earlier and was not yet well connected internally. As he started talking to other Managers about the change, he encountered a lot of resistance. He was about to give up when Jess 'Change Agent', a well-respected team member, offered to help. She had much less seniority than John, but many colleagues relied on her advice about navigating the business politics. She knew many of the people whose support John needed, and she eventually converted them to the change.?

Another example comes from Mike, a senior leader in a large manufacturing, and Adam 'Change Agent', one of the Managers. Mike was trying to create a new system 'knowledge management' to ensure continuity in client service during teams’ absences. But some of the other senior leaders were no help to get managers/key team members to support the initiative; they did not see the value of why the system was required. That all changed when Adam took on the project. Because the Managers/Key Team Leaders frequently sought him out for advice and respected his judgment, making him central to the company’s informal network, he quickly succeeded in persuading people to adopt the new system. He reached out to stakeholders individually, with both substantive and personal arguments. Because they liked him and saw him as knowledgeable and authentic, they listened to him.?

It’s no shock that centrally positioned people like Jess and Adam - who are provided with right skills and techniques - make successful change agents; we know that informal connections give people access to information, knowledge, opportunities, and personal support, and thus the ability to mobilise others. We have observed that high rank/senior leadership did not improve the odds that their changes would be adopted.
