Businesses and an Active Shooter
Active Shooter Training Can Help Save Lives. Whether it's playing the piano, hitting a baseball or selling automobiles, it's important for people to practice their craft. ...Training to survive an active shooting incident is more critical than ever before.
A business setting is where over 42% of active shooters take place with the average timing being 12.5 minutes. Law Enforcement average response time is 18 minutes. What does this mean for you? To me, this says that it's time for you as a business to step up and learn how to protect yourselves until help arrives. Safety no longer exists no matter where you are located. It is up to you if you remain safe in an unsafe world.
For those of you who say you don't have the money to push training or, it isn't important they will magically know what to do. Unless you have a plan and practice it often you will freeze in the moment. Schools practice fire drills all the time. Why would an active shooter drill be any different? Why is practice necessary? Heightened tension in an active shooting situation can dramatically impact a person’s fine motor skills. Even for experienced first responders, the difference between book and classroom training and a well-choreographed simulated incident can be revealing. When you lose your fine motor skills, and you go to lock a door and you can’t, that’s surprising. The classroom is a lot different than a real situation. I've seen a trained provider freeze in the middle of a simulation not knowing what to do. Imagine if that were during a real event? Would someone else have lost their life due to that freeze?
Businesses, schools and even churches are doing more to educate people about how to properly respond during an active shooting situation. What is your business doing? Is it working? Do you feel it will work in an actual active shooter situation? Are you sure?
