Warning: Does Your Passion Distract You from the Business of your Business?

If you are like me, you didn’t get into your business for the planning, the goal setting, or the lead generation, or to manage the books of a business. You got in it for the coaching, or consulting, or marketing, or writing or photography – whatever it is that is your practice – the thing that energizes you and lights you up. The thing that best utilizes your talents and is the pathway for your impact on the world.?

?

Deep inside, you might wish that you could do this thing all day long and ignore the rest because when you do it – you are “in the flow” often losing a sense of time and space. It is an awesome and exhilarating place to be.?

?

Let’s celebrate this for a moment. How lucky are we to have a passion and to be able to do what we love to do for a living? (Happy dance!)? ????????????

?

But, for entrepreneurs, this passion comes with a warning label. It can be seductive – so seductive that it can distract us – from the business of the business.???

?

I know this because I have fallen prey to this seduction time and time again. I have on occasion gotten so caught up in my client work that I have ignored critical aspects of growing the business. It was a hard lesson to learn, and even after seventeen years, I still need to put guardrails in place so that I don’t continually prioritize what I love to do over what allows me to do what I love to do.??

?

?Need some convincing?? Grab your favorite cup of coffee or tea, and let's talk about why it's time to focus on your business.?

?

  1. Revenue Growth: You're not just here to maintain the status quo; you're here to crush it! Working on your business means taking the time to set revenue goals and develop strategies to meet them. (By the way, we are conducting a free workshop on Oct. 25 on this very thing – see below and join us!)??
  2. Delegation: Repeat after me, "I don't have to do it all!" When you work on your business, your business grows which allows you to delegate (ahhh…!). ?Now, you can spend more time focusing on what you love to do.?
  3. Systems and Processes: Think of them as your trusty sidekicks. When you take the time to put systems and processes in place you become more efficient, reduce errors, and ensure a consistent experience for your clients.?
  4. Financial Fitness: When you work on your business, you dive into your financials. It’s not just about revenue, it is about profitability.? As the CEO of your business you want to have a handle on your cashflow, make sound investment decisions – (hello ROI!) and make sure your business is as financially fit as you are.?
  5. Branding: Your brand is like your business's first impression. Is it memorable and magnetic, or is it a little meh? Working on your business allows you to continually refine your brand and create messaging that truly resonates with your ideal client.?
  6. Work-Life Balance: We all want to have our cake and eat it too! When you work on your business, you create the time and space to achieve that elusive work-life balance. You can finally enjoy your weekends without that cloud of unfinished work hanging over you.?
  7. Innovate and Adapt: The business world is dynamic, and ever-changing. To stay ahead, you need to innovate and adapt. Working on your business lets you explore new ideas, keep up with trends, and shift to meet the evolving needs of your clients.?

?

In a nutshell, working on your business is like watering a plant. It might not seem like much at first, but over time, it grows and blossoms into something amazing. So, make it a habit to schedule regular "business dates" with yourself where you focus on the bigger picture.?

?
