Simplifying the complex is another skill or competency to develop in all your professional and business activities. Get good at making recommendations, presenting ideas, and writing letters as simple and straightforward as possible for your boss, your business associates, and your team members.
Much of business and life is filled with complexity and jargon. All of it can be simplified. For example, business letters should always begin with a "purpose of the letter" sentence. In addition, all types of reports and abstracts can be structured simply with headings or sub-headings that provide a road map for the reader. Headings should always include a succinct and clear executive summary supported by paragraphs or statements for background/current situation, opportunities for improvement, conclusions and recommendations, and next steps and plan of action.
Finally, project or program justifications can be structured in a similar way with an executive summary of the proposal, amplification of the proposal, options or alternatives considered, recommendation and justifications, and risks and sensitivities. These latter kinds of written justification are better than a power point presentation because they allow for reflective reading and provide the necessary detail for informed decision making. Always write to express, not impress. And remember, simple and clear writing reflects clear thinking, and it will show.
