Business vs. Busyness: The 10 Differentiators

How do you name yourself? A business person, or a busyness person?

Just check the 10 Differentiators listed below, but BEFORE:

You might strongly believe that you are overwhelmed and overloaded. May be you are expected to accomplish most of the things within the organization or your working group. Moreover, others never pay enough(!) attention to what should be done with satisfying level of responsibility as well as accountability. (not like yourself..;)

Then, you are a poor victim of busyness life, right..? That's really soOO sad..! (Excuse me for this smile on my face..)

Sorry to say, BUT:

I've spent many years in my life to witness huge crowds of such victims in business, sorry busyness life. However, people who do the right things not to be a victim are not that few. Not surprisingly, these people are usually achievers, target hitters, healthy looking, work-life balanced, winners, etc.. At least, they are seen like these from victims of busyness' perspectives.

So the question is:

What do they do right to differentiate?

  1. They constantly adapt change. They are not resisters, but instead early adapters.
  2. They value time management. They don't fake it, but they just make it!
  3. They know priority management. They fully understand the urgency nature of several tasks to be completed simultaneoulsy to make an effective optimization.
  4. They never lose focus. They are strong believers in focused execution.
  5. They are 100% sure that they are not neither "superman" nor another super hero character. They trust in teamwork and guided empowerment. They sincerely delegate to others and welcome delegation from superiors.
  6. They are "we" type against being a "me" type. They listen more than they talk. They know the simple rule: Talking is repeating..
  7. They spent enough time for understanding and knowing their team members. They know that no one is a chipset-powered engine. They never forget that business is still mainly about human.
  8. They treat and exercise their minds as a remedy finder instead of a fault finder. They not only appreciate but also follow Henry Ford's quote..;)
  9. They are not perfectionists (though they are expected to be). Instead, they believe in constant improvement. They are aware of the fact that even running is a function of continuous steps. It is just a matter of speed and stamina, not the length of each step.
  10. They welcome failures but definetely make the best use of their failures as lessons learned. They have ROF, Return on Failure, as one of their vital KPIs.
It is completely your choice whether to be a "busyness" person or to upgrade for being a "business" person.

So now, after checking the 10 differentiating items listed above, you should know better whether you are a business person or still struggling with being a busyness person. As said; it is not your destiny, but your choice..

Very interesting and necessary article Dr. Serhat TATLI. Necessary, because more and more people are getting burnouts, are not succeeding in having a balanced life, ... just because they are so "busy". But my concern is more that we see being busy equal to being "a hard worker" and being "successful". Let's admit it, people who spent days and evenings in the office are often perceived as being "hard workers" or "successful". So I strongly believe we need a change in mindset to make people aware that being productive and efficient does NOT equal long days in the office. I would even dare to state the opposite ... I once had a manager who told me "If you're not getting the job done within a normal workday (sure there are exceptional busy periods/days) then either you are not up for the job, or the job is too much for one FTE". Looking forward to more of your articles.
