Business Users in the Cross Hairs for OpenAI's Growth Strategy

Story by Shane Snider

Key Points:

  • When OpenAI unleashed ChatGPT in 2022, generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) went from a tech-world talking point to a global household phenomenon.
  • So, it was no surprise when OpenAI's ChatGPT began launching its own enterprise-focused products last year , targeting large enterprises first, then moving on to expand offerings to small and medium-sized businesses .
  • Highlighting its expanding enterprise offerings in a blog post this week , OpenAI touts improvements to security, Assistants API, improved administrative control, new pricing options and more.
  • API Product Lead Miqdad Jaffer Jaffer tells InformationWeek that the company’s efforts will continue to evolve quickly to keep pace with a rapidly changing enterprise AI landscape. More than 2 million developers throughout several hundred companies are using OpenAI’s API platform, Jaffer says.

Protecting Critical Infrastructure

Story by Carrie Pallardy

Key Points:

  • Volt Typhoon, a PRC state-sponsored actor, was discovered lurking in critical infrastructure for years. Considering increasing tension over Taiwan, the PRC’s presence in US critical infrastructure portends potentially devastating consequences.
  • “You don’t go into critical infrastructure to steal data. You don't go into critical infrastructure for IP. You go into critical infrastructure because you intend to cause damage either now or sometime in the future,” says Michael McLaughlin , principal of government relations and cybersecurity and data privacy practice group co-leader at law firm Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney .??
  • If China and the United States escalate their conflict over Taiwan, China could leverage its position in critical infrastructure to cripple the US’s military response and directly impact citizens.??
  • Most of the nation’s critical infrastructure is owned and operated by the private sector, but solving the problem cannot be the private sector’s job alone, or the government’s job alone.

Upskilling and Retaining Talent

Story by John Edwards

Key Points:

  • Powered by AI-matching algorithms, talent marketplaces allow managers to view candidates for specific job roles without the involvement of a recruiter. Gartner predicts that by 2025, 30% of large enterprises will have deployed a marketplace to optimize talent utilization and agility.?
  • A talent marketplace provides a mechanism to deploy the right talent, with the right skills to the right opportunities more quickly and effectively, observes Jeffrey Williamson , vice president, human resources, excellence and strategy at technology consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton , in an email interview.
  • Williamson notes that it's important to build, refine, and map out a common skill-based taxonomy. Doing so ensures that managers are defining job skills in the same way talent is presenting their skills in their profiles.?
  • When employees have access to a wide range of opportunities aligned with their skills and interests, they're more likely to find fulfillment in their jobs and, ultimately, their careers, Williamson observes.

For DR, Backups, and Security: Balance is Key

Podcast and Story by Joao-Pierre Ruth

Key Points:

  • Increasingly sophisticated attack types, which might include AI-powered threats, can make finding the right approach a challenge especially as cybersecurity is often seen as a cost rather than an operational benefit.
  • This can lead to conversations in the C-suite about what measures are worth taking to secure data and systems while also trying to ensure continuity of business.
  • Is zero trust a realistic approach for companies? Is it a necessity given the threats that can work rather silently in a long con?
  • In this episode of That DOS Won't Hunt, Dale "Dr. Z" Zabriskie CISSP CCSK , field CISO with Cohesity , and Kim Larsen , CISO with Keepit , discuss some of the considerations and strategies enterprises might implement to balance their security needs with their plans for IT disaster recovery.

How are GPUs Impacting Data Centers?

Story by Samuel Greengard

Key Points:

  • Large language models (LLMs) -- as well as other AI tools such as digital twins, extended reality and the metaverse -- require huge numbers of graphical processing units (GPUs) to train data sets or handle graphics intensive tasks.?
  • There’s a catch, however. GPUs are expensive, they’re in short supply, and they devour enormous amounts of energy. As a result, CIOs and other business and IT leaders are increasingly faced with the proposition of how and where to use them.
  • Despite all the recent hype about GenAI, GPUs have been trickling into the datacenter for more than a decade. Graphics processors play a key role in scientific research, deep learning, machine learning, and numerous other tasks, including machine vision, robotics, and automation.
  • With a clear understanding of crucial factors -- including the size and breadth of the training dataset; who will be using it; the projected volume of queries or hits on the system; and how GPUs and CPUs stack up -- it’s possible to make informed decisions.

Commentary of the Week

Story by Jane Moran

Key Points:

  • Long before ChatGPT debuted in 2022 and the meteoric rise of generative AI, scientists and technologists were quietly leveraging AI to move faster and make bigger leaps in scientific progress.
  • According to the 2023 MITRE Report , only 39% of US adults believe current AI technology is safe and secure. While the reservation in trusting AI isn’t surprising, there has been plenty of airtime devoted to the myriad ways AI can go wrong -- and has already gone wrong.
  • Our role is to offer our teams the support and guidance required to harness AI’s full power in ways big and small to inspire positive change, ensuring fear doesn’t override optimism.
  • It won’t be CTOs like me who?come up with the next great idea for solving the world’s most critical problems.?It’s going to be the people on my team -- and your team- who are in the trenches writing the code and building new solutions.
  • Don’t let fear prevent you from getting all the help you can from the most powerful technology available. Your team, and the world, need you to be fearless.?
