Business Tips for Women in Yachting at Boat Shows

Boat shows are a vibrant yet challenging environment where the yachting industry comes alive. For women (who are working at the show) in this traditionally male-dominated sector, these events can be overwhelming, filled with high expectations, networking opportunities, and, unfortunately, the occasional display of misogyny. However, with the right strategies and mindset, you can thrive at a boat show, earn respect, and maintain your mental well-being.

Here are some essential tips to help you navigate these waters with confidence, poise and Grace.

Command Respect through Knowledge Expertise

Women we need to work twice. First, we need to prove to them that we know what we are doing, earn their respect and then do our jobs, and the most powerful way to earn respect in the yachting industry is by demonstrating your knowledge!

It is not only enough to know well your products and services but specially is important to understand the BIG PICTURE and the entire industry as a whole.

Knowledge is power, hence make sure you understand The Superyacht Industry as a whole. Now you have resources like The Superyacht Industry Book, and the Yachting Masterclass to truly immerse yourself in knowledge and gain that confidence you need to thrive! (PS you can buy the book also at the boutique of the Yacht Club de Monaco)

Engage in conversations with confidence, share insights, and ask thoughtful questions. When you exhibit a deep understanding of your field, you not only gain respect from your peers but you also establish yourself as a credible figure in the industry.

Tip: Prepare a list of talking points and questions related to current trends and innovations in yachting. This will help you facilitate discussions and showcase your expertise.

Set Boundaries with Confidence

In high-stress environments like boat shows, it's easy to feel pressured to say yes to every opportunity or request. However, learning to say no is a crucial skill that can preserve your energy and focus. Assess your priorities and determine what aligns with your goals. Saying no doesn't mean you are uncooperative; it means you are intentional about your commitments.

Tip: Practice assertive communication. Use phrases like, "I appreciate the offer, but I need to focus on my current commitments," to express your boundaries clearly.

POV: It was hard for me to learn how to say no, and when I finally did I realized I was saying yes to many other things like yes to prioritize myself, yes to prioritize only what is truly important. So remember a no is a yes to something more important. My life actually changed when I started to say no (and to be honest you get a lot more respect from men when you tell them no than when you say yes to everything) I also say no to alot of events, I used to be the one being super happy to get invited to all the parties, cocktails, and events but then I would be drained after a full day of work + networking and parties I would end up collapsing so now I don't attend must invitations unless they have a meaningful business reason for me.

Manage Stress Effectively

POV: I remember in 2019 I collapsed after a full day at the boat show, I was on the floor in the street crying as I couldn't handle the physical and emotional stress I was on! Thankfully a friend of mine found me and gave me some water and called me a taxi to take me home.

Boat shows can be intense, and managing stress is vital for maintaining your mental health.

Here are some techniques to keep your anxiety in check:

- Schedule Breaks: Plan short breaks throughout the day to recharge. Step outside for fresh air or take a moment to meditate. I use the app AURA and lisent to some 5 min guided breathing meditations. Escape the show, I find this location really refreshing to escape the show for 15mins and take some time to breathe (without looking at your phone!)

Do the box breathing to calm your nervous system and bring cortisol levels down. Sounds obvious but Ive read alot about breathing and we don't breath enough, and by doing box breathing it is scientifically proven to reduce your stress immediately!

- Stay Organized: Create a detailed itinerary with your goals, meetings, and events. A clear plan can reduce feelings of overwhelm.

Write down your goals and expectations - I think this step is important and should not be overseen. I write my phone app what am I Really trying to achieve at this show? write three (realistic) goals.

Of course I am sure you all do this already, schedule all meetings on your phone calendar, write down a daily schedule and set up alarms. Print the show map, or have it in PDF on your phone ( Isend it to myself on whatsapp) pin-point all the locations of all my meetings one day before.

- Practice Self-Care: Prioritize sleep, hydration, and nutrition before and during the show. A healthy body supports a healthy mind. I personally don't drink alcohol during the show, it helps me stay focused, and I've seen some drunken ladies at some industry events which are super embarrassing! Please remember you are still here for business, so dont embarrass yourself, selc control is key, if you can't have only 2 glasses of wine then just don't drink at all. Avoid fast food or finger food, plan in advance your meals (there are some salad bars in Condamine not far from the show!)

Start your day with positive affirmations (I do them while I do my skin care routine / brush teeth) I am powerful, I am strong, I am smart, I am beautiful, I can do this... etc.. there are many guided ones on spotify if you are not familiar with it.

Integrate a morning sports rutine before the show, I usually do a 20-min hiit workout and Im good to go!

Challenge Misogyny with Assertiveness

Unfortunately, misogyny can rear its ugly head at industry events. While it’s disheartening, remember that you have the power to challenge it. One effective way is to stop smiling or laughing at inappropriate jokes. By not endorsing such behavior, you set a precedent that it’s unacceptable. Respond assertively if a vulgar joke is made; a simple, “I don’t find that funny,” can go a long way in establishing your stance.

Tip: Surround yourself with supportive peers and allies. Engage in conversations about these issues and strategize on how to address them when they arise. We all have that "buddy" at work we can vent off- and try to stay away from toxic people!

Build a Support Network

Networking is a significant component of boat shows, but it’s crucial to seek out relationships that empower you. Connect with other women in the industry, mentors, and allies who understand your challenges and can provide support.

Establishing a network of like-minded individuals can offer encouragement, advice, and opportunities.

Tip: Attend women-focused events or panels at the boat show, list of conferences here. These gatherings can serve as a safe space to share experiences and foster connections.

Know your purpose

When running a business, it's essential to identify your “big why.” Understanding your core purpose allows you to concentrate on what truly matters and helps you navigate challenging times with determination.?

If you’re an entrepreneur attending the boat show, take a moment to reflect on your motivations. Are you there solely for sales and leads, or are you also looking to enhance brand awareness and foster B2B partnerships? Consider how each interaction can contribute to your broader goals.

For those representing a company, knowing your personal “why” is equally important. If your motivation is simply the paycheck at the end of the month, you may find it difficult to feel inspired or achieve a sense of fulfillment. Strive to connect with the company’s mission and values, as this can ignite your passion and drive you to make meaningful contributions at the show.

Embrace Your Unique Perspective

Your unique perspective as a woman in yachting is an asset. Use it to your advantage by sharing your insights and ideas. The industry benefits from diverse viewpoints, and your contributions can lead to innovative solutions and fresh approaches. Don’t shy away from expressing your thoughts; they are valuable.

Tip: Use social media to amplify your voice. Share your experiences, insights, and successes, and engage with others in the industry. Feel free to always tag me so I can repost and your ideas can reach a wider audience!

Prioritize Mental Health

Lastly, prioritize your mental health above all else, I seriously cannot express this enough!

Recognize the signs of burnout or stress, and seek help if needed. Whether through therapy, support groups, or simply confiding in a friend, addressing mental health is paramount for long-term success.

Tip: Consider journaling your experiences during the boat show. Reflecting on your thoughts can provide clarity and help you process challenges.
