Business Storytelling – a term we hear a lot now. Is it the latest fad or trend? If not, then what is it all about?
If one has to summarise the importance of Business Storytelling in one sentence I would say, ‘Business Storytelling is the core of business itself’.
Here is a quick introduction on Business Storytelling.
What is Business Storytelling –
As the name suggests, it is story telling which is about business, your business. So, if you are telling a story in office during business hour, is that Business Storytelling? Maybe!
The aim of business story telling is to, Win You Business. Period.
The art (or science) of using stories to communicate with your business stakeholders (both internal & external) with the intention of generating more and better business for the company is Business Storytelling.
Why Business Storytelling –
I have been asked this question a few times.... “Why Business Storytelling? I have my data and fact sheets and I just need to present that. Stories are built by those who do not have any substantial data to back themselves.”
The point to note here is, Business Storytelling is not about ‘making up stories’ or trying to cover incompetence.
Many will remember the stories we heard as kids, which had a moral lesson at the end. That is the power of Business Storytelling.
If you are able to make a personal connect with your audience, you would be able to make your point much faster. You would be heard.
- A probable candidate for a job who can weave an interesting story has a higher possibility of being hired.
- A sales executive who is able to establish a connect through story with the potential customer can expect a higher success of registering sales.
- A product story that touches the possible consumer has a higher possibility of being preferred over the other products in the market.
- A new business can attract the attention of prospective investors and potential customers through effective Business Storytelling.
- A manager who understands Business Storytelling would have a better performing and highly motivated team.
The business can grow multi-fold in much shorter time with the effective implementation of Business Storytelling.
When and Where –
When should an individual OR a business indulge in storytelling? Whenever and wherever possible.
During an interview? Yes
During a sales pitch? Yes
During a team meeting? Yes
During a client meeting? Yes
During employee assessment? Yes
During peer to peer interaction? Yes
During discussion with one’s manager? Yes
During a board presentation? Yes, most definitely!
During a presentation in front of investors? Of course Yes
The point to note here is ‘whenever possible’. One should not try to force fit it in situations and interactions.
Many ask, “but how does one know when to use a story and when not to?.”
The important part is, when you are sharing a story it shouldn’t be jarring or out of context. The story should make a connect with your customer.
