Business roundtable: AIDN Vic Shaping 2024 and beyond

Our director Brydon Johnson joined other senior representatives from Australia’s defence industry SMEs at a roundtable organised by Australian Industry & Defence Network Victoria (AIDN VIC) last night to discuss the challenges we face as we await the release of the Australian Government’s Integrated Investment Program (IIP).?

The IIP is a comprehensive program of capability-related projects proposed by the Department of Defence that includes workforce, new weapons, IT and communication technology, facilities and infrastructure, systems and enabling equipment and more.??

While Australian businesses, like us, continue to deliver projects for new and existing clients, some work has paused since last year’s release of the Defence Strategic Review.??

With a clear knowledge of priority areas of investment and projects SME’s can:?

  • understand the products needed.?
  • identify and address how we can meet those needs.?
  • reach out to supply chain partners to secure our involvement.?

AIDN Victoria Deputy Chair, Andrew Robinson sought feedback on challenges they saw for the Defence industry in 2024, along with how the industry association can best support us at state and national levels.??

Our discussions proved timely with the release today of the Defence Industry Development Strategy (DIDS) by the Minister for Defence Industry, the Hon Pat Conroy, MP.???

The strategy provides us with seven Sovereign Defence Industrial Priorities as follows:?

  • Maintenance, repair, overhaul, and upgrade of Australian Defence Force aircraft.?
  • Continuous naval shipbuilding and sustainment.?
  • Sustainment and enhancement of the combined arms land system.?
  • Domestic manufacture of guided weapons, explosive ordinance, and munitions.?
  • Development and integration of autonomous systems.?
  • Integration and enhancement of battlespace awareness and management systems.?
  • Test and evaluation, certification, and systems assurance.?

This is a comprehensive strategy document that provides greater clarity for defence industry participants on future areas of focus.??

Our thanks to AIDN VIC for arranging last night’s roundtable event in Melbourne. It was great to see so many other members both formally, and informally as we joined in post event networking opportunities.?

You can read AIDN’s response to the DIDS strategy on their LinkedIn page.

AIDN is now calling for “the release of the IIP as a vital element for industry to fully plan, with confidence and to move forward.”??

The next few months will provide even greater certainty and we look forward to being a continued driver for growth and business excellence in the Australian SME market.??
