The Business Resilience Framework: Keep Moving While Conserving Energy

CEOs and senior leaders are constantly steering their companies through the ever-changing dynamics of the business world. Imagine harnessing the insights from a global industry that has thrived amidst disruption, offering valuable strategies and lessons for leaders across various sectors. As a former senior executive within the cruise industry, I learned hard lessons that I have developed into a framework that I use with my C-Suite clients across many industries and sectors.?

I developed the Business Resilience Framework based on 6 key processes I believe every business leader should use. I shared these in my book Hard Ships and have aligned the framework beyond the cruise industry to be applicable across industries. In this series of articles, I will show you how to apply the framework in your business.

Process 2. Keep moving while conserving energy

Domino's Pizza, known for its prompt pizza delivery, was restricted from interacting personally with anyone throughout the lockdown. Yet, Domino's leadership recognized the importance of their keystone activity—delivering pizzas efficiently—as the foundation of their business.

Understanding the need to keep moving while conserving energy and resources, Domino's embarked on a strategic transformation. They asked the critical question: "How can we continue delivering pizzas to our customers while ensuring their safety and convenience?" This question was the catalyst for innovative change.

They applied this insight by rapidly rolling out a comprehensive contactless delivery system. This involved a range of initiatives, including online ordering, digital payment options, and "zero-contact" delivery methods. The delivery had the drivers leaving the pizza at the customer's doorstep, ringing the bell, and stepping back to ensure a safe and minimal interaction, which was possible because everything had been completed digitally in advance.

Domino's didn't stop at implementing these changes; they documented their new procedures and customer-centric initiatives. By doing so, they created a playbook for adapting to unprecedented circumstances for themselves and other businesses looking to navigate similar challenges.

This strategic balance allowed them to continue serving their customers while adapting to external disruptions effectively, demonstrating resilience and adaptability.? As a business strategist with extensive leadership and advisory experience, I specialize in helping organizations harness these very attributes. Through a deep understanding of inherent capabilities and evolving market demands, I guide businesses to respond effectively, innovate, and transform proactively.
