June 24, 2022Inclusive innovation is core to the work?of MaRS. We are deeply committed to an innovation agenda that works for that all and advances our purpose to help innovators create a better world. To that end we encourage companies to not only celebrate June as National Indigenous History Month and Pride Month but to take action to advance authentic inclusion in the workplace and beyond.

Practicing Authenticity

Canadian Senator Dan Christmas?encourages us to see National Indigenous History Month as “an opportunity for all Canadians, not only to learn about the rich heritage Indigenous people bring to Canada but to personally contribute to achieving true reconciliation between this country and First Nations, Métis and Inuit.” “Key to achieving this is the involvement of all of us in sharing the story, learning the truth about the past and determining to be a part of a shared future, working together to benefit Indigenous peoples and to affirm their role in the fabric of Canadian society with dignity and respect. To learn more about the history of Indigenous peoples in Canada, you’re invited to read the 2019 report of the Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples called? How Did We Get Here? A concise, unvarnished account of the history of the relationship between Indigenous peoples and Canada.”

?Carol Cone’s Purposeful Connections highlights the approach of New Belgium to end “rainbow washing”, the inauthentic use of the pride rainbow by companies without addressing “their own policies, practices, and year-round support related to LGBTQ+ issues. For example: if a company makes a donation to an LGBTQ+ nonprofit but doesn't provide employees with insurance plans that cover gender reassignment, how can they claim to be allies?”
