BUSINESS PROCESS - WHY ARE SOME BUSINESS PROCESSES BAD & INEFFECTIVE?

Organizations are made up of hundreds of interconnected business processes. Imagine if you could build new business processes for your company or what if you had the skills to improve their present business processes? A bad business process is so frustrating. It doesn't matter if you're a customer or if you're the employee, a bad business process can drive you crazy. ?
A bad business process is so frustrating. It doesn't matter if you're a customer or if you're the employee, a bad business process can drive you crazy. Why exactly are some business processes so bad? And how did they get that way in the first place?

#. A few reasons include assumptions:

  • Ambiguity
  • Miscommunication
  • Wrong interpretation
  • Functional biasness in Supply Chain
  • Corporate biasness and injustice
  • Misalignment
  • Bad service and product

#. Reason for bad ineffective process:

  • Poor leadership
  • Bad organizational culture
  • Management support for internal politics
  • Having intention to do unethical practices expecting different kind of personal gain
  • Resistance for change

  • In some cases, the goals seem so obvious, we just make assumptions, for example, often, companies assume customers want the lowest cost. It sounds right, so we don't question it, but in fact, our customer may want great products and great service, at the lowest possible cost.
  • We focus so much on low cost, we make decisions that weaken our products and services. Lazy companies jump to conclusions. The best companies take the extra time to challenge their own assumptions, and they discover the true goals of their business processes.
  • Another reason might be ambiguity. Has there ever been a product you loved? You saved up for it, you went to the store, and then when you see it, you realize, this isn't what I wanted. It happens to all of us. Focus groups may tell you what they want, and you may give them exactly what they asked for, but there's no guarantee the customer will actually like it. Developing innovative processes means dealing with ambiguity. Some companies actually develop good processes, but somehow, the documented process never gets taught properly.
  • Poor communication forces the employees to develop their own process on the fly. Believe me, I've worked with companies that want to redesign their business processes. I asked to see their documented present state process, and often, it's very good, but none of the employees are even aware it exists. Finally, some companies have great intentions, but they just aren't following through.
  • There's misalignment between their advertised goals and their actions. Often, we judge them as hypocrites, but consider your personal goals and values. Now consider all of your actions. We all cut corners, we get tired, we get busy. In many cases, we put off doing the right thing until later.

This misalignment between our goals and our actions, it doesn't just happen to us, it happens to companies, too. Think about your processes:

  • Have you been patient enough to think through your process goals?
  • Have you considered that maybe your customers don't really know what they want?
  • Has your documented process been properly communicated to your employees?
  • And, are your employees just so busy that they're struggling to keep up?Make sure your processes are being given the opportunity to succeed.
