Meet physician, businesswoman, and philanthropist Marquetta Colbert

“I have a passion for helping others and realize the importance of helping them where they are."

Growing up in West Dayton, there was not an overwhelming number of doctors. It was Drew Health Center and, Dr. Charles S. Johnson. My mom chose Dr. Johnson. The son of a President of Fisk University and a fierce health advocate for African Americans, his office was always full and busy. We would sometimes wait four hours or more to see him.?

Yes, you heard that right four hours or more.

Now Dr. Johnson was amazing but as this was my introduction as a young child to health care, my only goal as an adult was to get a quick doctor. However, when my husband became extremely ill, partially the result of our doctor being quick but not attentive to all the presenting signs of my husband's failing kidneys, I decided I needed to find a physician that had the skill and passion of Dr. Johnson but not the crazy late hours. I found that in Marquetta Colbert.

Colbert is a Nurse Practitioner who opened her medical practice, Colbert Family Health and Wellness, more than a decade ago in Trotwood and most recently a second location in Harrison Township. As a nurse practitioner, she?offers evidence-based, empathic care that is preventive and holistic.

For Colbert, her practice is more than a business. It is a place for health education - from the physical to the mental. It has been her lifelong passion to serve her community in this way. Even as early as 16 years old volunteering at Miami Valley Hospital, giving back in this way came naturally. She saw the gaps in healthcare, particularly for African Americans, and wanted to be a part of the solution. Today, her daily work is providing that solution. And the work extends into her philanthropy.

In recent years she and her husband, Michael, created the Marquetta D. Colbert/Colbert Family Health Scholarship Fund which provides a yearly $1,000 scholarship to Dayton Public School graduates who pursue degrees in nursing. They believe that an investment today ensures that there is a future generation of medical professionals. But her give back does not stop there.?She regularly gives to other causes through the Colbert Family Health Fund. She supports health fairs, and health screenings and offers to mentor to young people.
