PFAS RELATED CORPORATE NEWS FROM SEC FILINGS AND EARNINGS CALLS DURING THE LAST WEEK
Pinnacle West Capital Corporation reports that the EPA is seeking information from APS regarding APS’s use, storage, and disposal of substances containing per-and polyfluoroalkyl (“PFAS”) compounds at the Ocotillo power plant site in order to aid EPA’s investigation into actual or threatened releases of?PFAS?into groundwater within the South Indian Bend Wash (“SIBW”) Superfund site. The company estimates the initial cost of the remedial investigatory work at $1.7 million but additional costs could be incurred depending on the EPA findings.
Clarus Corporation reported a drop of about 10% in terms of gross profit from the same period last year. Among the factors cited were an increase in polyfluoroalkyl substances (“PFAS”) related inventory reserve expenses, unfavorable product mix due to increased discontinued merchandise sales at the Outdoor segment, as well as higher inventory and sales return reserve expenses at the Adventure segment.
U.S. Steel continues to monitor emerging PFAS regulations. At present they do not directly impact the company because PFAS is not knowingly introduced PFAS in its manufacturing processes; the company continues to review new PFAS regulations related and their potential impact.
?Canada Goose Holdings Inc. continues efforts to source more responsible materials particularly preferred fibre from Canadian suppliers. The company has reached one of its sustainability goals for fiscal 2024--100% of the products made in Canada are PFAS-free.
Columbia Sportswear reports the number of PFAS related regulations at the global and jurisdictional level impacting our business, and in particular our products, has significantly increased. We expect this trend to continue, and as a result, will impact our expenses, product input costs and ultimately our products, which may in turn impact our revenue. For example, in anticipation of the effectiveness of the regulations in California and New York states related to?PFAS?chemicals, we have been working to eliminate?PFAS?chemicals across our global product line. These?PFAS?matters have and may continue to result in a more promotional environment in 2024 as retailers move through merchandise containing?PFAS. Specifically, the company is going to open temporary outlet space this year to help move merchandise that contains PFAS chemicals.

Johnson Controls International in an earnings call reports that they have reached a settlement agreement with the plaintiffs in an ongoing PFAS lawsuit. The company expects that is going to significantly reduce their PFAS related liability. Settlement payment is largely going to be covered by insurance. The company has also discontinued the production of the sale of our fluorinated firefighting foams as of June.
