Business Owners Need To Be Like Sha’Carri Richardson

You might have heard about Sha’Carri Richardson. She completely smashed the world record for the 100m World Championship this past week. If this doesn’t ring a bell for you, you might remember her from a story two years ago when she was disqualified from the US Olympic team due to testing positive for marijuana in her system.

It was later revealed that she had just suffered the loss of her biological mother and had used marijuana as a method to cope with the grief. In summary, she made a mistake based on life circumstances that at that moment, derailed her path.

Now you’re probably wondering how this has anything to do with being a business owner.

Well, let me ask you... Have you ever been sick and out for a week or more? Have you ever had a child sick or injured? Maybe you have also lost someone? Maybe you’re just struggling with your mental health. My point is, that life happens to all of us. Sometimes in really big and sometimes paralyzing ways.

Maybe you have been blessed to be fairly unaffected by the gunk in life, but have you ever made a mistake in your business because you rushed a decision or forgot about something? Cue the humanity in you too!

Oftentimes, our business life and personal life are intertwined. As business owners, we have to delicately balance our families and lives along with our business, team members, and clients.

It’s a lot of responsibility! It’s a lot like being a top performer and competitor in our corner of the world. Sha’Carri showed all of us something amazing. She demonstrated that no matter how big the mistake, how much people trash you or hate on you, no matter how “far” your fall is, you can still make an incredible comeback and WIN.

We can recognize the determination, focus, and strength it took to overcome all of that and she still gave it her all and won! I know that I’ve made my fair share of mistakes in business (and life). I could choose to shrink back and dwell on them or I can also remember the people who we’ve helped, whose lives we have been able to change, and the impact we get to make through both ours and their success. I personally think failure is a huge part of success and most of the ultra-successful people will agree with me. We often learn more from failures than from successes. We have the opportunity to shift and adjust when we fail so that next time we win! Sha’Carri is a demonstration of just that.

I don’t know exactly what she had to do in order to go from suspended to significant, but I know it was a journey. It’s the same journey we have to go on as owners when we go from nothing to something and beyond. We need to have the strength, discipline, focus, and determination to keep going, despite the failures, challenges naysayers, and valleys!

Be like Sha’Carri. Don’t let the mistakes of your life stop you from taking the championship and winning! Take today to see what needs to be discarded, challenged, and shifted to really position you for the "win" of your goals.

You can rise from the ashes, accomplish great things, and change people’s lives! We should all strive to be like Sha’Carri!?
