Business Owner Story Series #20

?? Meet Jason: Transforming Lives through Your Move Health ??

It’s a privilege to introduce you to Jason, founder of Your Move Health. Based on the Mornington Peninsula, Your Move Health is revolutionising how exercise physiology supports individuals battling cancer, chronic illnesses, and injuries, as well as those looking to enhance their physical capacity.

At Your Move Health, Jason and his dedicated team of Exercise Physiologists and Allied Health Assistants, provide personalised exercise plans, tailored to each client’s unique needs and goals. Whether it’s weight training,?balance, flexibility, or cardio, these programs can be completed either in the client’s own space or at the Your Move Health clinic in Hastings. Clients also have the option to join small group programs, creating a social, supportive, and affordable exercise environment. These groups, typically consisting of 6-8 individuals, with each person still following their personalised exercise plans and supervised by the Your Move Health team. This individualised attention ensures that everyone progresses safely and effectively, a key differentiator from typical gym settings where one-size-fits-all routines is more the norm.?

Jason's journey to founding Your Move Health is as unique as the services he offers. As a child, Jason was endlessly curious, always asking “why” and interested to understand the intricacies of human physiology. After completing a degree in Exercise Science, his passion for sport led him into a career supporting athletes, culminating in a role with an AFL club, where he analysed exercise and sleep data to help optimise player performance. While this experience was thrilling, including being in the coach’s box of a Grand Final match,?Jason grew frustrated?working in an elite sport setting, as he felt that his knowledge and skills could be better utilised supporting people with health challenges.

Driven by?his?desire to?have?meaningful impact, Jason returned to academia, completing an Honours year researching the role of exercise in treating prostate cancer. “I wanted to explore if what I’d known to be true for sports performance, could help people suffering with illness. When I started the research, I was one of only?a handful of?people in Australia looking at the role of exercise in cancer treatment”.

Jason’s groundbreaking work highlighted the transformative power of exercise, not just physically but emotionally and socially, empowering patients to take control of their treatment?journey. “I saw that including exercise in treatment plans increased their capacity and confidence to take control of their cancer treatment and to reengage with life”.?

Jason’s dedication to continuous learning then led him to complete a Master’s degree in?Clinical Exercise Physiology?at Deakin University, where he now teaches. He also served as the State Chapter Chair for?the?Exercise Science?& Exercise Physiology?Professional Association, mentoring countless aspiring practitioners and guiding them on their career paths.

Jason’s commitment to giving back extends beyond teaching and mentoring. He founded Your Move Health to provide evidence-based, personalised exercise programs, particularly for those who have struggled to find help elsewhere. “Helping people feel in control again, feel empowered and active participants in their own healthcare?rather than just passengers, that’s so satisfying to see”.?

However, running a business focused in such a challenging area requires emotional resilience. Finding the balance between empathy and care and staying emotionally stable yourself is a challenge for most healthcare professionals. “Our team talk quite a bit; we deliberately debrief and help each other when it gets emotional”. Jason describes that he uses his own exercise time as a time to process things and he makes sure to spend time outdoors when he needs clarity and to reenergise.?

And, Jason candidly shares how his own struggles with depression and anxiety, in the years following his early university study, have shaped his approach to self-care and empathy for others. “I’ve always been a fairly deep thinker and this helps me detach a bit from the emotion impacts of my work”.

Jason’s story is a testament to the importance of balancing professional dedication with personal wellbeing. He works tirelessly, often putting in 70-hour weeks, driven by a passion for helping others. Yet, he is acutely aware of the need to find balance, especially with a new baby in the picture. His commitment to fair and ethical practices, ensuring that services are accessible and tailored to each client’s financial situation, sets Your Move Health apart in the healthcare industry.

Reflecting on his journey, Jason emphasises the importance of balance between client care, staff wellbeing, and financial sustainability. “I don’t really like thinking about the business side things, but I know I have to so that I can keep doing the work I love and keep helping people. As the owner of my business, I have three motivations - do well by my clients; look after my staff; and make money. I often feel like I have to choose to focus on two, and that it is difficult to balance?all three”.?

There are likely many other business owners, who are driven to help others, that face this same trade off - provide accessible service or make money. And, unfortunately there is no easy answer, instead a constant balancing act is required, that staying aligned to vision and values helps to navigate.?

Jason is a remarkable human. His story is not just one of professional success but of deep compassion, resilience, and unwavering commitment to making a positive impact. It’s this commitment and drive that will see Jason and the team at Your Move Health continue to provide high quality health and exercise support that enhances the lives of those in challenging situations.?
