As a Business Owner, I hate process – why can’t I just focus on the fun stuff?

As a Business Owner, I hate process – why can’t I just focus on the fun stuff?

It's a question I used to ask & it's certainly one that lots of my Business Owners that I work with ask, "I hate process, why do we need it?"

This has become even more evident for me as the business owner whose assistant/integrator has left. I love the fun stuff – the big picture thinking, the working with clients, the podcasts, the significant relationships with Westpac, BNZ, Connector Communities, etc. but I'm not so good with the detail.?

This is why process becomes even more essential for us as Business Owners & Visionaries.??

I am grateful that Jen documented all her core processes (from her Accountability Chart seats) so that my temporary VA can take over these tasks.?

We tend to think that documenting processes takes the creativity or human element out of it, but it's precisely the opposite.?

And as Isadore Sharp said, "Systemize the predictable so you can humanize the exceptional."?

He means that if people are clear on what' needs' to be done & how to do it, they can focus on adding value through their own human creativity.?

That's the first mindset hurdle to overcome.?

And then there's the challenge: we want to get every single process documented within an inch of its Life. But, again, aiming for perfection before we release it – means we get stuck in never having it done.?

That's why I love the EOS process component. First, focus on the 20% core processes that will give you 80 % of the results. Then, document & simplify them down so that you can have the team start following them & adjust as necessary – it's progress, not perfection!?

You can read a lot more about it in the lead article this week and learn about why fighting with your Integrator isn't bad!?

I hope you enjoy the articles ???

Here's this week's business tip, life hack & find of the week to help you. And don't forget the inspirational quote, which you can download as wallpaper or lock screen for your phone.?

As always, if you find great things that you'd like to share, then feel free to email me?

for inclusion in one of my weekly newsletters.?

BETTER BUSINESS: Is Process documentation essential?

No alt text provided for this image

Having a blueprint is an essential aspect of building a house. It helps the builders know where things go, allows the electrician to figure out the wiring, etc. I don't know much about building, but I know that blueprints are essential! Likewise, creating documented processes is like the blueprint for your business as it keeps everyone on the same page. As part of the EOS Model?, the Process Component? is one of the Six Key Components? to operating a successful business. In this blog, Will Crist discusses five misconceptions about maintaining team alignment on processes.?

The five misconceptions are:??

  1. Owners need to dictate processes for the entire company??
  2. You need a perfect process from the start?
  3. You can only have the right way to every aspect of a process?
  4. It will take too much time upfront?
  5. It's not worth the effort?

Documenting your processes doesn't have to be complicated, either. I don't have the time to type out what I do, format it, and check for grammar mistakes or typos. But, I can record my screen and voice and do what I usually do and record it. Then I get someone else to document it in a simple 1-page checklist.?

That way, when there is a new person on the team, they can watch it. Easy! Read more about it in the blog.?

BETTER LIFE: Do you need 8 hours of sleep?

No alt text provided for this image

Are you getting enough sleep? I feel like getting 8 hours of sleep is a miracle these days! Especially with all the traveling, I'm doing & the additional stress at the moment. But, according to Russell Foster, getting the idealized 8 hours of sleep is rare. Which, in some way, makes me feel a little better!??

I also loved hearing that waking up at night is perfectly normal – who knew???

First of all, who is Russell Foster? He is a professor of circadian neuroscience at Oxford University and the director of the Nuffield Laboratory of Ophthalmology.?

According to him, sleep disruption can reduce our cognition, ability to process information, poor memory, poor concentration, impaired decision making, poor communication skills, and reduced social connectivity. That's just the short-term effects.??

I am experiencing some of those right now, with all that is going on, so it's time to refocus on good sleep hygiene – listen to the interview if you can but at the very least read the article – it's quick & easy to read & gives us 11 quick tips for better sleep!?

FIND OF THE WEEK: Should Visionaries & Integrators fight?

No alt text provided for this image

?If you know what I do, chances are you've heard me talk about 'visionary' and 'integrator' as essential roles in business. To recap, visionaries often focus on the big picture, culture, and client relationships and usually come up with big ideas. An integrator is a person who thrives on creating order out of chaos. An integrator is a person who is naturally suited to setting priorities, solving conflicts, removing obstacles, and getting the company from point A to point B.??

So, having these two roles working closely together can be a bit tricky. And yes, there will be fights - That's a natural part of a healthy business & team.?

At EOS, we run on EOS & we walk the talk.?

Here is a podcast from EOS Worldwide where they talk to Mark O'Donnell, the Visionary for EOS Worldwide, and Kelly Knight, the Integrator. In this episode of the Rocket Fuel Podcast, they share their key insights about what it takes to cultivate trust in a partnership and action steps for building a heart-centered culture.?
