Business News from Poland with a Finnish Twist
Economy in Poland
ECONOMIC UPDATE
GDP: The World Bank has upgraded its GDP growth forecast for Poland to 3.2% for 2024, 3.7% for 2025, and 3.4% for 2026.
PMI: The Polish Manufacturing PMI rose to 48,6 in September, exceeding the forecasts. Eurozone average was 45,6 and German PMI 42,6 (up from 40,2 - however at alarmingly low level)
INFLATION: CPI inflation was 4,9% in September, bit higher than forecasted. Current forecast for next months is between 4-5% and during the H2 inflation is expected to decrease somewhere between 3-4%. October forecast is at the same level, or even starting with 5.
REFERENCE RATE: Unchanged at 5.75% and cuts expected at the end of Q1/25. However recent signals in the economy are putting pressure for earlier cuts.
PLN: Polish Zloty has weakened during last weeks to 4,35 levels. One reason behind is the US elections and risk aversion in the global markets. Struggling Polish export companies would respect even weaker PLN.
SALARIES: Small decline in monthly level but 10,3% up vs 2023 (private sector average wage). Based on many talks, I'd say an average increase for 2025 is around 7-8%, which is more or less in line with the minimum salary increase in 1.1.2025.
UNEMPLOYMENT: Still stable and record-low. However, some say there are more job offers, but on the other hand we have experienced surprisingly large number of applicants recently.
EXPORTS: This is a very interesting topic currently. There are several alarming signals:
a. Polish exports have decreased this year; trade balance has switched to negative, ie imports > exports
b. In September the new orders by export companies -7%
c. German PMI is at significantly lower level; worth remembering that over 25% of Polish exports goes to Germany
d. According to Puls Biznesu's report, there are several manufacturing sectors where Polish exports to the EU have decreased by a double-digit number BUT in the meanwhile Chinese companies have grown their imports.

Poland’s Automotive Exports Decline 17.86% in H1 2024
In the first half of 2024, Poland's automotive exports fell by 17.86% year-on-year to €23.7 billion, primarily due to a 56.5% drop in lithium-ion battery exports essential for electromobility. Diesel engine exports plummeted by 72.03%, while automotive parts saw a slight increase of 2.65% to €9.06 billion, and heavy truck exports surged by 37.21%.?

Sharp Increase in Vegetable and Fruit Prices
In September 2024, vegetable and fruit prices surged by 10.8% and 10.1% year-on-year, respectively, driven by supply disruptions due to flooding that damaged approximately 25,000 hectares of farmland. Overall, retail prices rose by an average of 4.9%, with notable increases in non-alcoholic beverages (9.6%) and sweets (8.6%). Despite some bulk products like sugar and flour becoming cheaper, the trend of rising food prices is expected to continue until the end of the year. The situation should stabilize, but falling prices are not anticipated immediately.

Polish Household Savings Rate Drops
When 42.5% of Poles intended to save more in 2024, spending priorities still shifted due to inflation. Over 60% now save monthly, with 49% able to cover at least six months of expenses. Despite high inflation, 37% have over 20% of income left monthly, with men and younger Poles saving more systematically. Poland’s Q1 2024 savings rate of 4.9% remains below the eurozone’s 15.4%. Young adults, earning less on average, often save only enough for one month. Rising costs may impact Q4’s economic growth.

New Job Offers Rise 12% y/y in September; Intel Warns about Layoffs
A recent Grant Thornton report reveals a 12% YoY increase in new job offers across Poland, with 288,260 listings posted in September. Monthly growth also rose by 1%, marking the highest three-month average in two years. Following a post-Ukraine war downturn, job listings have rebounded, surpassing recent annual levels since July.
Healthcare saw the largest YoY job increase (24%), followed by manual labor (13%), while demand in finance, HR, and legal sectors declined.
Speaking about layoffs - recent news tells that Intel has informed the labor office in Gdansk about possibilities of layoffs. This is part of Intel's global 10bn$ cost-cutting plan. Intel's R&D center in Gdansk employs currently over 2000 people.
A practical experience from Spondeo recruitment team has shown that number of candidates responding to job offers have increased significantly.

Despite these challenges, most companies maintain diversified project portfolios and cash reserves to weather the slowdown.
