Building Momentum

I have written many pieces over the past 2 years about the challenges of transition from working in elite sport and running your own business. What I haven't talked much about recently is what’s helped us as a team progress, because we certainly have.

Here are 7 things that have really impacted our business performance and momentum over the past 12 months.

1.?????? Think Sessions. We predominantly work remote as a team which has worked fine but having meetings in person with specific areas to work on has sparked huge ideas and brought more clarity to our work. Why in person has allowed this to happen I don’t know but there is something about the laughter and chemistry that allows things to come to the surface. We know we need to work towards at least 1 team meeting in person per month.

2.?????? Knowledge share. We are in our own little bubble as a team which can lead to bias and the same type of thinking. We realised we need outside input from experts in other fields. This has been hugely beneficial to the team for knowledge and skill development but also a sense of growth and development.

3.?????? Sharing financial targets. This part is not easy and timing is important but sharing more financial responsibility with the team really helps everyone in the longer run, understanding cost, what we need to do to bring in more funds, what is the best use of our time while staying true to your values and philosophy

4.?????? Review of purpose and vision: What feeling do we have with the work we are doing? Are we working with the people we can help most and also give us that ‘buzz’. There is still a lot of work to do in that area but the right people are coming into our programmes and booking 1-1 sessions. Who are they? People who are open to learning and being guided rather than just spoon fed with a ‘meal plan’. Working with the right people means we can better use systems and resources to support them and the experience for the client and us is more positive and effective. Our services will support anyone thats ready for the change in mindset and habits.

5.?????? Feedback and Pilot programmes: There is something intangibly positive about launching something to the world that is not perfect or complete. ‘We are testing something we believe in’ allows you more space to give things a go and learn. You can clarify a process, key messages and gain invaluable feedback for the next iteration. The pilot programmes have been a huge huge winner over the past few months building confidence in our products.

6.?????? The right relationships with the right expectations. The partners I have in business have worked because of aligned values, expectations being clear and a real chemistry to do something positive and meaningful. I can say with great pride, my work with Glenilen Farm BoConcept Kinetica Sports and Irish Life Wellbeing has been a joy, great people working hard to be the best they can be. Exciting things done and so much to come.

7.?????? Message clarity and sales pressure, this is something that has only clicked this year for us. We do a lot in this business, events, 1-1 consultations, courses, programmes, memberships talks, corporate packages and that’s just a few. How are people supposed to know what to do or choose with so much going on, we often lost track ourselves. We broke everything down into projects and phases and which programme and offering was best placed in our season plan. It has allowed us to communicate / market our offering with so much better clarity and confidence and that’s resulted in more sales. Having a time pressure to force people to join or not join is also been so important to get people to commit to working with us.

I know for successful business owners this stuff is obvious, but for me, even a year ago, this would have been helpful to know. Hope there is something in it for you. We are doing ok Eva Hoey Gemma McGuinness
