A Business (And Life) Lesson From Maverick Himself
I’m always on the hunt for business (and life) lessons, especially when indulging in films — and, during the latest Top Gun movie, Maverick (Tom Cruise) gave me a timely reminder of something I still battle with to this day.
One of the fighter pilots, Rooster, often struggles to get into the “mode” when flying.
He’s extremely talented & more than capable, but lacks the confidence of his rival pilot, Hangman.
Maverick quickly notices this — pulls him aside — and says something along the lines of:
“You need to think less, and start doing more.”
A one-liner that is more than relevant for most of us, myself included — within business and life.
When I first discovered the world of online marketing, I spent a lot of time thinking.
I read books, thought about business “ideas” and formulated plans on how I would approach this new world.
The result?
Zero clients, zero dollars, and zero confidence.
I simply wasn’t doing the tasks that needed to be done in order to move toward my goals.
For me, this was the act of outreach (…emailing qualified brand owners pitching my offer)
The moment I started doing this mundane task, the quicker I signed my first few clients.
And the rest is history.
Thinking is great. Don’t get me wrong.
…but it doesn’t get shit done.
You must do, my fellow marketing menace.
Do the time. Do the work. Do the act.
And you shall be rewarded accordingly.
Keep aware of this as we move into 2023.
And be sure to sign up to my mailing list while you're at it.
Till next time,
