The company you keep is vital to who you become and how you make decisions. Bad company eats you up, but the good ones make you grow.
Think about your biggest win so far.?
It’s likely that it took you some time before you achieved that result, right??
And that’s normal. Most people have to put in a lot of time and effort before they can achieve outstanding results.
But that’s not the case for The Business League member, Evan.
Because within three months of hanging out with our community, he’s achieved a whopping 60% of his 12-month goals!
What’s his secret, you ask?
It’s not that Evan’s goals were super easy.?
But he credits being part of The Business League community to make him realise that he was probably low-balling his goals. He needed to set the bar higher for where he was willing and ready to play in and where he was investing in if he wanted to improve his results.
And that’s what he sought out to do.?
Evan’s story is proof that the more you up-level yourself and your network, the more you up-level your business.?
Take it like this: You are what you eat.?
In other words, the network of people you hang around with has a significant influence on your success.?
Surround yourself with negative people all the time, and it will be a matter of time before negative results start coming in. But if you spend time with the right people, they’ll support you, uplift you, and help you achieve better results in a shorter timeframe.?
And that’s what we’ll talk about in this article.
The Company You Keep Matters
Have you ever wondered what’s behind the success of the world’s most influential people??
Why do you think millions of people fail on the stairway to success??
There is a multitude of sacrifices to be made as one climbs up that stairway. But one underlying factor seems to play an important role:?
The relationships we make.?
There are two types of relationships we generally tend to engage in: the ones that feed us with positivity and the ones that cast negative energy on us.
Spending time with people filled with negative energy is bad for our well-being. And after being around them for a while, our thoughts can become consumed with their negativity.?
But just like we’re capable of mimicking a negative character, we can do so with a positive one as well.?
That’s why it’s better to surround ourselves with the first group of people – the positive ones. They can impact our lives and decisions in a good way. More importantly, they feed us with positivity, making us more decisive leaders.?
How to Find People Who Make You Better
It may so happen that there is a very limited number of people you feel comfortable around and who make you feel good.?
Other than your friends and family, it’s important to expand your network in different social circles.?
To help you do so, we’ve come up with three helpful tips:
Look for People Who Show a Genuine Interest in You
Once you’re ready to make connections, start with a give-and-take mindset.? This means you want to invest as much energy into the conversation as you expect to receive back.

When you’re out there chatting with that person, pay attention to how they respond.
Do they seem interested in what you just said and come back with equally engaging feedback?
If you see that they understand your viewpoint and show a genuine interest in your ideas, it’s a sign of a potentially good connection.
Use the Park Bench Test
The ultimate goal of building relationships is to spend time with people who inspire us and make us feel better. Naturally, you want to make trustworthy networks, but how exactly do you recognise one?
After all, not all relationships are worth the hassle.?
To help you decide on the ones that are worth pursuing, you can use the bench test. And we’ll show you what it is in the following example.
Mark ran into his former business associate, Kayla. She was working hard on a deal he had offered a few years back, but he decided to go with another vendor.?
What came after were ugly moments that included a lot of angry calls.?
They would run into each other over the years, but they were always frosty.?
Just recently, they shared a conference table. Mark used the opportunity to apologise for what happened, and Kayla seemed to be over the situation as well.?
And here’s what Mark later asked himself: “Would we stop one another for a talk if we discovered the other sitting on a park bench?”
He realised that he’s not sure yet. But what he knows is that they might be getting there.
My point?
When in doubt, ask yourself the same question as Mark.
Generally, it’s worth pursuing relationships with people who pass your personal bench test. ?
Use Reminders to Reinforce the Idea of Spending Your Time with the Right People
It should be clear by now that there are two types of people in our lives: the ones that energise us and the ones that eat up our energy.
Life is too short to spend its precious moments with the negative ones. It’s always good to remind yourself to spend time with the right people.?
And for that, these four pieces of advice can come in handy:
Achieve Your Goals with the Right People
The relationships we build have a significant impact on our overall well-being. They also influence our decision-making, as well as our goals.
Evan surrounded himself with a community that was supportive, inspiring, and shared his interests. He knew that he wouldn’t be able to achieve such great results had he not joined the community.
Be more like Evan and look for people who have a positive impact on your life.?
