Business Growth: Like Sending Your Child to School for the First Time

Business Growth: Like Sending Your Child to School for the First Time

I remember it like it was yesterday—my son being born. Everyone told me how incredible it would be, but in those early moments, all I could feel was a mix of fear and helplessness. This tiny baby boy was now mine and my partner's responsibility. The exhaustion from a long night of labor, coupled with my partner's traumatic cesarean, only intensified those emotions. But that was years ago, and as everyone predicted, two things became undeniably true:

  1. Time flies, and before you know it, they grow up and become little people, so cherish every moment.
  2. You will love them more than anything in the world, a love so profound it's hard to put into words.

Despite my initial fears, the depth of my love for my son is indescribable. And now, years later, we're approaching the next big milestone—his first day of school this September. He’s excited and ready, eager to make new friends and hungry to learn, which is such a blessing. While I’m thrilled for him to embark on this new journey, learning social skills and filling his mind with knowledge, I also know it’s going to be emotional, especially for my partner. She has been his everything, never spending a day without him, and with no close family nearby to help, their bond is incredibly strong. Watching him walk through those school gates will be hard for her, and I know I’ll need to be there to support her.

This experience made me reflect on entrepreneurship and the parallels between letting go as a parent and as a business owner. If you want to truly grow a business, it’s like watching your child start school—you have to surrender some control. Just as you trust that the school will do their utmost to guide and nurture your child, as a business owner, you must trust others to help your business thrive.

In the early stages, a small business can be managed by one person, overseeing every detail and micromanaging operations. But true growth—reaching significant, even international, proportions—requires delegation and leverage. As the leader, you set the vision and guide the direction, but you also have to let go and trust in the capabilities of good people. Whether it’s running a department or outsourcing tasks like lead generation to a telemarketing agency like Big Wolf Marketing, my company, letting go can feel like an act of faith. But it’s essential.

The key is to work together, provide clear direction, and then let them do what they do best. Just like a child going to school grows, learns, and becomes their own person, a business flourishes when you delegate and trust others to contribute their expertise. Amazing things can happen when you let go.

Over the last decade, we've helped 1000's of companies increase their sales. If you need support with your sales and lead generation, drop us an email, give us a call, or visit our website at www.bigwolfmarketing.co.uk. Let’s grow together.
