Project REWIRE - transforming semiconductor technology and enhancing supply chain security
Can you imagine charging your electric car in just 10 minutes? Research by the University of Bristol's new £11m Innovation and Knowledge Centre (IKC) REWIRE, could make this a reality.
Led by Professor Martin Kuball (School of Physics) and co-led by Professor Palie Smart, Dr Minhao Zhang, and Dr Nikolaos Stylos (Business School), the IKC is conducting cutting-edge research into the development of wide/ultra-wide bandgap compound semiconductors, that stands to revolutionise the development of new, more energy efficient electronic technology. Supported by partners at the Universities of Cambridge and Warwick, and industry leaders including Bosch and Toshiba, this research will play a pivotal role in advancing the UK's net zero goals.
Examining the global networks of semiconductor manufacturing, the IKC will also enhance supply chain resilience, utilising innovative analytical tools to understand geopolitical risks and vulnerabilities and protect supply chains against future disruptions.
The Circular Agriculture Hub - reducing waste in UK food production
Whilst 7% of the UK population live in food poverty (House of Commons, 2023), around 7% of all food intended for human consumption is going to waste on UK farms each year (WWF, 2022). Also, whilst farmers are a critical element of the food supply chain, they are frequently marginalised and find themselves struggling to stay business.
This stark disconnect in our current food supply chains is clear, but how can it be addressed?
University of Bristol Business School academic Dr Lucy McCarthy, together with Dr Anne Touboulic (Nottingham University Business School) are looking to tackle exactly this with their new venture - The Circular Agriculture Hub.
The Hub, set to launch this year, will connect farmers with surplus produce to community-based customers (alternative to big supermarkets) including food banks, small food producers, social supermarkets. In doing so, the Hub aims to reduce food waste from unused produce and its lost value to farmers, whilst simultaneously providing affordable food to local communities.
Paper by Dr Fangming Xu accepted for publication - "Contagious Stock Price Crashes along the Supply Chain"
Dr Fangming Xu's paper (co-authored with Buhui Qiu from The University of Sydney, and Andy Yeung and Cheng (Colin) Zeng from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University) "Contagious Stock Price Crashes along the Supply Chain" has just been accepted for publication at Production and Operations Management, a UTD24 and FT50 journal.
The study reveals a delayed transmission of stock price crashes from major customers to suppliers, influenced by the information opacity of suppliers. It also shows that customer operational incidents have a greater contagion effect than financial incidents. Suppliers respond by diversifying their customer base, enhancing operational efficiency, and improving product quality, but only improved operational efficiency effectively mitigates the adverse impact. The research provides new insights into supply chain risk factors, highlighting the importance of operational improvements in boosting resilience.
