The Business of Cyber Security and Its Importance

Cybersecurity revolves around protecting digital data and networks from unauthorized access and damage. It primarily focuses on confidentiality, which entails keeping some or all client data secure; integrity, which involves ensuring that stored or transmitted data remains untampered; and availability, which ensures that information is always accessible when needed, with minimal downtime (National University & Marketing, 2023).

Implementing proper cybersecurity in an organization drastically reduces the risk of losing client data by incorporating security measures and continuous data backups. This, in turn, ensures productivity and maintains a steady income flow, with few business interruptions, even during a disaster. For instance, after the World Trade Center explosion in 1993, companies without strong cybersecurity measures and off-site data backups lost millions of dollars, with some even collapsing due to data loss that was critical for rebuilding their business or continuing operations. It’s much better to spend on cybersecurity measures to avoid the potentially massive costs of a disaster (World Trade Center Bombing 1993, 2022).

Cybersecurity measures protect both customer and organizational data from breaches. This is crucial, as breaches can cost companies millions in lawsuits from clients whose data has been leaked. An example is the Equifax breach, which compromised nearly 150 million client records, leading to a $575 million settlement with the FTC, CFPB, and states. This could have been avoided with robust cybersecurity measures (Equifax to Pay $575 Million as Part of Settlement with FTC, CFPB, and States Related to 2017 Data Breach, 2023).

With effective cybersecurity measures in place, organizations ensure regulatory compliance, preventing potential fines and penalties from the government. For example, Didi Global faced $1.19 billion in fines for violating China’s national network security and personal information protection laws (Hill, 2024).

In conclusion, cybersecurity is essential to the smooth operation of businesses and organizations, and it’s here to stay to keep the bad actors out.
