Our round up of this month's HOT NEWS on business, sustainability, carbon and climate over the last month
A politically important month for climate, as the UK elected a much more pro-climate action government, and the ramp up to the US elections underway. In other areas, we've seen the usual corporate inability to reduce emissions and continued confusion over carbon credits. Here's our highlights!??
1. New UK Government start strong on climate
The incoming Labour government has spent its first few weeks backing up some of its clean energy, green finance and nature conservation promises - with a stop to new North Sea Oil licences and announcements on Great British Energy. Can we become a Net Zero leader??
2. What would a Trump return mean for US climate and environment policy?
Its as bad as you think - and more. The Republican's Project2025 sets out a repeal of energy transition incentives, roll back of greenhouse gas regulation, limit regulation of clean air, clean water, move away from supporting energy transition and weakening regulations on pesticides and agrichemicals. Great review by Drilled Media.
3. SBTi backtracks on use of carbon credits in corporate Net Zero targets
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a key organisations focused on aligning corporate decarbonisation targets with the global goal of limiting climate change. It appears to be stepping away from allowing an increased role for the use of carbon credits indicated earlier this year by the SBTi board, a move that generated significant controversy both within and outside the organisation. 4. Google's climate impacts worsening
Google’s goal of reducing its climate footprint is in jeopardy as it relies on more and more energy-hungry data centres to power its new artificial intelligence products. The tech giant revealed last week that its greenhouse gas emissions have climbed 48% over the past five years. That’s definitely not good news for our climate.
5. Denmark announces world-first carbon tax on agriculture
A carbon tax on emissions from livestock? Yes - that's the plan! Why is this both an awesome step? Total emissions from global livestock represent 14.5% of all anthropogenic GHG emissions according to the FAO, as well as facing challenges over deforestation, land and water use, and ethical treatment of animals. Hopefully other countries will follow suit.?
Quote of the month
“Nature is dying. [It]?underpins everything – the economy, food, health and society. We stand at a moment in history when nature needs us to defend it.”
- Steve Reed, the UK's Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Secretary, announcing a rapid review of the UK's targets to cut waste and improve air quality, water and biodiversity.
Jargon busters
We're jargon busting to make sure climate impact is accessible and as simple as possible, one topic at a time.
What are planetary tipping points?
In recent years, the term "planetary tipping points" has gained prominence in discussions about climate change and environmental sustainability. But what does it really mean, and why is it crucial for the future of our planet??
It's vital to break down these complex concepts into understandable terms for everyone, ensuring informed decisions and actions. In our latest blog, we explore what planetary tipping points are, the latest research, and what they mean for our collective future. Read more here.
