Very few companies control the majority of media in the US. In 1983 media was controlled by 50 different companies, now there are 7 companies that are controlling the majority of information for 324 million Americans.
Why is this important?
In 1949 the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) introduced the Fairness Doctrine. This policy required holders of broadcast licenses to present controversial issues of public importance and do so in a manner that was honest, equitable, and balanced. Under the Reagan administration the FCC eliminated this policy in 1987. Right after this policy was removed is when Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, and other conservative media started. Many experts believe that the removal of this policy is what has led to the rising level of political party polarization. The Us versus them mentality.
