Is there a business case for carbon removal?
Climeworks
With our Direct Air Capture technology, we remove CO? from the air to fight global warming.
Dear friends of carbon removal,
The market for carbon dioxide removal (CDR) currently relies on?voluntary corporate commitments. Yet with a lack of clear standards for the?measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) of?different CDR?approaches, it is?challenging for corporate?buyers to?navigate this fast changing landscape. We invited Shopify , a pioneering corporate buyer,?to exchange perspectives?on what it means to purchase?CDR in this emerging industry. Join us and register below!
Carbon catch-up with Shopify
As for many other CDR?companies, Shopify was one of Climeworks' very first corporate customers. Since 2019, they contributed more than USD 32 million to CDR through their Sustainability Fund and are a founding member?of Frontier. Shopify is no doubt a trailblazer in the industry - but what does it take to follow their path? Learn more in our "Carbon catch-up" with Mitchel Selby, Program Manager at Shopify's Sustainability Fund, and Climeworks' Corporate Partnerships Manager, Laurent Müller, on?March 1st!
A call for higher standards
The CDR industry needs to scale massively to fulfil its potential in the fight against global warming. However,?clear rules on criteria for CDR such as durability, additionality and measurability are yet to be defined. Therefore, Climeworks joined 35 organizations representing?carbon removal buyers, suppliers, verifiers, non-profits, and academics in an open letter to call?for standards to assess the performance of different CDR approaches.
Christoph Beuttler , Chief Climate Policy Officer at Climeworks?comments: "Establishing strong monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) standards in the carbon removal industry is very important to make different carbon dioxide removal (CDR) approaches comparable, and incentivize the creation of high-quality CDR that is additional, measurable and highly durable. In essence we need to define what a ton of CDR actually is.?The standards set now will live for a long time. We need to make sure they are up to the task, which is what this industry letter is calling for."

Climeworks at TED
Making a technical topic like direct air capture (DAC) tangible is no easy feat. But with more than 15 years of experience in developing DAC, Climeworks'?co-founder and co-CEO Jan Wurzbacher knows how to get the message across. We're proud to share that Jan was invited to the?TED Countdown London Session, where he underlined what it really means to operate a first-of-its-kind facility like Orca. Share Jan's TED Talk with your network to show?an inspiring expert take on the challenges to scale DAC to gigaton capacity by 2050!
We can get to net zero. And beyond.
So long friends, let's do this!
