Business Analyst vs Data Analyst

Data is the crucial element that connects a Business Analyst to a Data Analyst. To better understand the distinctions of each, let's take a close look at the tasks that Data Analysts do.

Who is a Data Analyst?

The work of a Data Analyst consists of collecting, defining and cleaning, modeling, and analyzing data of all kinds and types. Usually, however, it is done to discover the types of information that can help companies make better choices.

The specific duties of Data Analysts differ from industry to sector, company to company. In general, however, the Data Analyst will be expected to do certain of the following duties:

  • Looking for opportunities for growth
  • Data requirement gathering is a way to determine what information is required
  • Data collection
  • Cleaning of data
  • Applying algorithms and creating new ones to control automated tools
  • Analyzing and modeling data to discover important patterns and trends
  • Sharing findings with other members of the group

The tasks that are performed are classified into four main categories:

  • Understanding the data
  • Examining the information
  • Management and creation of databases
  • Data Analysts can share the data with other people

Who is a Business Analyst?

The business analysis encompasses an abundance of data analysis similar to the one described above. It can be considered based on data analysis, and it provides a wider background for the data. A Business Analyst examines the ways the data is integrated into the larger business operations of an organization as well as other elements that aren't typically covered by massive amounts of data, for example, workflow or organizational structure.

In reality, the Data Analyst is adept in turning data into valuable insight, while the Business Analyst can see how businesses can utilize those insights on the ground. Business analysis is focused solely on generating actionable data which can be used to improve businesses; the aim is to formulate recommendations.

Business Analysts are, in essence, Consultants, offering data-driven suggestions and implementing measurable projects to measure change and assess their success.
