Focusing on Outcomes over Outputs - Our New Guide to Objectives & Key Results (OKRs)

We have all been there - either in annual or quarterly planning, making arrangements to get the “big rocks” done for our teams and organization. And then…we get to the critical point of defining what the outcome will be - the intended impact or benefit of our activities. Instead, we find ourselves focused on the output - the tangible deliverables, or the direct results of our activities. It’s an important, but sometimes difficult distinction, to make. The question is…are we so focused on outputs that we can’t achieve outcomes?

So how can we pressure-test to see if we are effectively using outcomes? One popular way is to use the OKR (Objective & Key Result) method. In this method, you define what success looks like - the Objective, or the goal to be achieved - and plan the steps needed to achieve it. The Key Results are how you will measure your success - note the word “measure” - meaning there is a number attached to it.?

In this method, the emphasis is on the end result, not the process to get there. Why is this important? It allows teams to become laser-focused on what’s really important, create transparent goals across teams, and ultimately drive faster results across the organization.?
