Bush Whispers (Chapter 65)

Chapter 65

Ed got back and hour later. He drove his Bentley into the garage and opened the boot. Did not want to know who his friends were but what he had brought was pretty neat and was definitely going to give us the upper hand. He had brought us five Heckler & Koch autos with what looked like silencers on them. There were about twenty boxes of ammo with three extra clips for each weapon. There were two boxes which he lifted out and put them on the garage table. Smiling like a crazed Chestshire cat he opened the one like he had just been given an early Christmas present and pulled out a big H&K machine gun with a bi-pod that ran a belt feed. Wow he was on a roll.

“Shees Ed, if this is what’s in this one what’s in that one.”

He laughed “These will give us a totally unfair advantage’ then he looked serious “But I’m so pissed off at the moment as to who wants to do this and flipping well why?”

He opened the other box and took out what looked like binoculars but with a head band and some other gizmos on and around the lenses. I saw a wicked look on his face.

“Night glasses. We will see them in almost total darkness. If they also have them we will take ours off and switch on the big spotlights outside and blind the buggers, then we can take them to the cleaners.”

“I think I need to take a walk even though we are trying to stay out of sight, maybe I can get a better grip on it.”

I walked to the door, turned and asked Ed one final question. “As a matter of interest Ed, do people get kidnapped for ransom in the UK?”

He turned and looked at me “Yes but so few and far between to matter, well that we get to hear about anyway. Why, you think that this is what it’s about?”

“Not really but think about it Ed. Times are getting tough, you probably don’t have too many enemies business wise unless it’s someone who had a beef with your old man, so what does that leave us? Not a hell of a lot now does it? Are you going to let the authorities know about this before the dog fight?”

“And what am I going to tell them Doggs? Oh gentlemen I have a guy here that can tell the future and he says........... aah”

He gave me the roll of the eyes and the spread palms. I heard someone laugh behind us, it was Margy and Moira.

“I’d like to see the look on their faces, what about you Moira, I think it would be an absolute hoot?”

They both turned and wander down to the kitchen chuckling.

Morgan had a look around the house and was figuring out shooting lanes and what covered what. He then walked round the property making notes then came back inside and between Clive and himself chatted about what would work best and what would afford the best cover. Ed watched them. “Know something guys? Every time you guys get to go anywhere trouble seems to find you.”

Morgan turn to him “Nah you got that one wrong Ed. We go looking for trouble and they just keep getting in the way. We got what we call a ‘troubleometer" looking at me "and it works just fine. You have a point, though we can’t seem to stay out of the deep end, can we? Anyway Ed we got ourselves a reasonably easy place to defend, depends how many and how well armed they are. We will soon find out though, won’t we?”

We all met in the kitchen for some coffee and to plan tonight’s escapades. There was one thing worrying me.

“Ed, this is your back yard and your cops and other authorities are pretty anti what we are planning. Do we shoot to kill or what? Are we going to let them dictate how that goes or are we now going to take a fixed decision to take them out, period?”

I saw Morgan, Clive and Margy nod and look at Ed.

“Guys I have been thinking about this and my thoughts are, we let get them close to the house and away from the boats, stick the spots on outside and ambush them. Have them out of the game before it even starts. Two of us can be close to the pier but covered so as to cover anyone still in the boats.” “I think that might be a good way to work this. We don’t want to shoot the heck out of these guys and have your Bobbie types having hives and fits. If they pull the triggers after having them cold, they get what they deserve.”

I saw nods all round “One more thing Ed, show us where their best landing spot would be and lets rig some lights in that area, maybe up in a tree or two, something like that, really give them something to think about. All their so called plans opened up and foiled before they even get to play. It would put me off big time. That’s unless these guys are pros. One other thing........ could not get a read on anything in particular earlier on, its like nobody is thinking about it or invested in it, weird but no whispers, zilch."

That is what we did with the light faltering as only it can in England. We worked quickly and finally had everything set as we wanted it. Clive and I would take the spot near the pier and we would have radios and ear pieces to keep in contact. We then had a light supper with loads of coffee to keep the mind in high gear. Moira made a few thermos flasks of coffee and a couple of extra sandwiches in case we got hungry. Once it got dark enough, we kitted up warm and worked our way to our selected spot. Clive carried one of the H&K squirt guns and a Star. I had picked out a beautiful old Winchester Model 94 which carried 8 cartridges of .30-30’s. It had an octagonal barrel which did not weigh too much though. Ed had said it was based on their first ever rifle the ‘Yellow Boy’ and was a special edition but it shot well. I also took a 45 just in case. We tested the radios and turned them down until they were quiet but we could still hear any call. We pulled the tarpaulin over us and settled down to wait.
