Bush Whispers (Chapter 31)

Chapter 31

Later that afternoon Dad called me over and said that Ed had just radioed him and asked if I could come through to Johannesburg. He had said he needed some help with a few things. We radioed him back and we were told that a Cessna was already on its way up to Manne and we would fly back the next morning. About an hour later the Cessna landed and to my surprise it was Clive, the same pilot that Morgan had arranged for Margy and I to fly here and back when we did the President’s wife kidnapping job. He was glad to see all of us again, saying that this part of the world agreed with him and his health. We arranged for Brinn and Briggs to help Josh out on the water safari while I was away. We all settled in, had supper and watched a movie which Dad showed on the back wall of the lounge. Thinking back to the movie house in Johannesburg, this was really primitive movie viewing. I preferred ours. The portly guy had also come out, thanked us again and then also settled in to watch the movie. The doc had already left for Maun earlier with Feelan who was flying back tomorrow with some hotel guests.

Clive and I flew back to Johannesburg early the next morning and flew over some of the most beautiful countryside anywhere in the world. There were only a few places in the world where you flew over a countryside filled with herds of buffalo, elephants, buck, giraffe and wildebeest with rivers, open lakes and greenery all round. The silvery shimmer of the mist lifting off the earth below and the sun coming up made for a kaleidoscope of colours and patterns that boggled the mind. Man this was living and I said as much to Clive. He just smiled and said that was why he flew and never got tired of it. I told him I was taking lessons which made him smile even more. We touched down at the Baragwanath airfield and as we taxied to the hangers saw Ed waiting for us on the apron. We all said Hi with me introducing Clive to Ed and the two of them laughing and saying they had already met. As we got closer to the Mercedes waiting for us the door opened and out climbed Morgan. What the hell was going on but then saw the smiles and relaxed. This looked like it could get interesting and it did.

We drove into Johannesburg and being midmorning the roads were not all that busy so got to our destination relatively quickly but also thanks to Morgan driving and knowing all the short cuts. We had been talking about everything but what Morgan was doing with Ed but I kept myself from asking, knowing they would tell me when they got to it. We had driven through the city going towards Pretoria or so the signboards had indicated and where getting to the suburbs on the outskirts of Johannesburg when we pulled into a long driveway and drove up to a very imposing house. As we were getting out and collecting our luggage from the boot I heard a familiar voice.

“Look what the River Rats have brought home.”

I turned to see Margy dressed in jeans and a tight white top and then remembered why she had got to me so quickly.

“Well well, looks like living in this part of the world suits some people!”

She laughed, walked up to me, put her arms around me and kissed me.

“Missed you Doggs, really missed you.”

I was about to tell her the same when we got some muttered and derogatory comments from Ed and Morgan.

“Think you two should get a room” that from Morgan.

“Take the whole day off before we try to do some work” chipped in Ed.

Margy and I broke our hold of one another and gave the chirpy two some withering looks.

Margy smiled “Shees guys, jealousy won’t get you anywhere.”

After our bags had been unpacked we had been asked to get together on the patio round the pool. When I got there Ed and Morgan where going over some documents.

“Come on over and have a look at these Doggs. Ed and I have put a few things together, operational wise and want your input.”

I walked over and picked up the document. “Has Margy seen this?”

“Margy had just got here before us so when she comes out she will also have to go over it as it concerns all of us and especially you two. Morgan has already added his bit” then looked expectantly at me.

“So Morgan, either one, you are here to lend some ‘other’ kind of support or Ed here has talked you into joining us. Hopefully the latter as we would probably need some of your spy type tactics somewhere along the line.”

As I asked that, Margy walked out of the house and before he could answer she quipped “I also hope you are joining us, really do.”

I saw Morgan turn and look at Ed. “You going to do the honours chief?”

“Well guys, meet your new team mate. Morgan has been good enough to take me up on my offer without me having to resort to anything violent”

We all laughed and waited for more.

“He is our intelligence officer, supplies person” chuckling at the last one “He will be our ‘go to person’ for any Governmental connections we need to make all over the world as regards the police, army etc and then more importantly Morgan is going to be one of our main operatives. We are going to need someone to carry out these rescues with you guys when there is an element of danger or if you are going into an area of conflict. I know that you two can look after yourselves” looking at Margy and I “but there is going to come a time or an incident where you are going to need all the help and firepower you can, to get out alive............ that is where Morgan comes in. You guys OK with that?”
