The Bus Ticket Theory of Genius- Paul Graham

Paul Graham’s “The Bus Ticket Theory of Genius” encourages us to be patient, curious, and persistent in something that matters the most and to choose paths based on obsessive interest rather than external expectations.

1.?????? An obsessive interest- this is critical because it fuels hard work. It pushes the obsessed individual into new territories that allow them to discover novel ideas. An obsessed mind is always prepared.

2.?????? Create your paths - Graham also advises against giving in to societal pressures for opportunities that may seem to be more financially rewarding and prestigious. He advocates following one’s genuine interests which might be the path not taken by all.

3.?????? Infinite capacity of taking pains- The geniuses have an infinite capacity to take pains for something that matters to them in which they are obsessively interested. This might have a lot of risk which could be proportionate to reward.

4.?????? Avoid getting Frozen- Sometimes it is important to take a break and try something different. Avoid getting frozen in the roles that are dictated by circumstances beyond your control. This is where you start spinning when your flexibility drops and it ends up trapping you. You get to shake things up, you need disfluency. ?

5.?????? Waste a lot of timeGraham emphasizes the significance of perseverance and hard work. You need to waste a lot of time on something that matters to you when you have least resistance, depth is the byproduct.
