Bursary programme bolsters ROMPCO’s vision and empowers local communities

The bursary programme run by the Republic of Mozambique Pipeline Investments Company (ROMPCO) is a concrete manifestation of its commitment to social responsibility, community development, and the overarching goals outlined in its CSI strategy and policy. The programme effectively addresses critical areas such as education, skills development, inclusivity, and holistic support, says Mpho Sekoala, HR and L&D Manager at ROMPCO.

“It contributes to the company’s vision and mission while making a positive impact on the lives of individuals and communities in which we operate,” comments Sekoala. She has nearly three years’ experience at ROMPCO under her belt, while her extensive experience includes a two-year stint at the Central Energy Fund, providing HR support for both CEF and iGas.

The ROMPCO bursary programme commenced in June 2020 in Mozambique and South Africa. The intention was to contribute to the skills development of marginalised communities in both countries and increase their chances of participating in the economy, particularly the oil and gas industry.

The first cohort included ten students in Mozambique and seven students in South Africa in various engineering disciplines such as electrical, chemical, and mechanical engineering as well as the finance/accounting field. Since the programme’s inception, three students have graduated. The remaining 14 are in their second, third, and final years of study.

The programme is rolled out on a cohort basis, meaning students in their first and second years are funded until they graduate before a new cohort is taken on. Priority areas are determined by the ROMPCO Talent Management Committee during the planning stage of each cohort, informed by the requirements in its operational and support functions. The bursary is all-inclusive and covers tuition, accommodation, prescribed books, laptops, transport, and a monthly living allowance.

“ROMPCO believes in offering a holistic and supportive programme to ensure the success of our students. Our students have access to the ROMPCO Wellness Programme for additional psycho-social support if required. ROMPCO also hosts an engagement session with students, their parents, and university faculty to ensure sustained communication and support,” concludes Sekoala.
