On this World Suicide Prevention Day, we must confront an unsettling reality: burnout is killing us.
In a world that glorifies busyness and productivity, millions silently suffer from the crushing weight of burnout, and for many, it ends in tragedy. Suicide is the final chapter for those who have been pushed beyond their limits, where mental and emotional exhaustion rob them of hope.
Burnout is not just a buzzword—it’s a pathway to despair. And today, more than ever, we need to recognize the link between burnout and suicide to save lives.
The Brutal Reality of Burnout
Burnout goes beyond exhaustion—it is a state of complete mental and emotional collapse. It often starts with relentless pressure, high expectations, and a constant drive to meet impossible standards. Over time, it erodes a person’s spirit, leaving them feeling:
In this fragile state, hopelessness sets in. For some, this overwhelming burden becomes too heavy to bear, and suicide may seem like the only way out.
The Growing Crisis
Suicide is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, with over 700,000 people lost to suicide each year, according to the World Health Organization. The global rise in burnout is directly contributing to these heartbreaking numbers.
For healthcare workers, corporate professionals, educators, and frontline responders, the unrelenting stress, long hours, and emotional toll are driving more and more to the edge. During the COVID-19 pandemic, this crisis only intensified, exposing the cracks in our mental health systems. The culture of overwork and silent suffering is leading to an epidemic of despair.

I’m also maxed out beyond burnout .. all that said .. for me .. the two aren’t related .. my reason for suicidal thoughts is wanting the pain of my trauma to end .. wanting the pain that society is so effed up that I’m not the only one in suffering .. we have a whole nation .. souls want to “die” bc the weight of the world is on everyone’s shoulders .. we just have an obsurd amount of people who just don’t give a sh*t .. the banks, the government .. the ones who claim to be there to take care of the people .. for me burnout and stress are the cause and effect .. not just the “state” of being .. if that makes sense .. like you are stressed, traumatized etc and so you get burnt out .. like a star in the sky burns out .. until a new opportunity arises your human vessel just sits and waits and learns about their human vessel and about those around them .. then one day a door will open and then another and another .. you’ll then be able to recreate yourslef in the current vessel or choose to remain the same … and wow sorry that totally took me down the preverbial rabbit hole ..

6 个月Thank you for this connection between suicide and burnout. I burned out working in the education field full time, plus letting life's stressors pile up. I now have a routine that helps me handle my stress positively. However, it took me to have cancer to start seeing the importance of managing my stress differently. We need to have a conversation about the connection of burnout to suicide, mental health, and other health diagnosis. Prevention is the key!
