Some people say there’s no such thing as burnout, but anyone who has experienced it knows firsthand it’s a very real thing. Unfortunately, some of us at some point in our careers may suffer from it.
The definition of burnout is when someone finds themselves in a state of severe exhaustion as the result of stress over a long period of time. Oftentimes, we simply ignore it, because we still have to get the job done. It is a surprisingly common condition, so much so that the World Health Organization (WHO) has even gone so far as to list burnout as an “occupational phenomenon” and a condition that results from experiencing significant and perpetual stress in the workplace.
THIS WEEK'S PODCAST
Therefore, this week's podcast ...drum roll please…will be Arianna Huffington's “Secrets to Tackling Burnout” with Ashely Graham. I’ve listened to this podcast a numerous amount of times and Arianna Huffington is probably one of my all-time favorite females. Whenever I need a little perspective this is a great one to listen to.
WHAT I REALLY LOVE ABOUT THIS PODCAST
What I really love about this podcast is that Huffington talks about key topics such as society’s current attitude to burn out, even in our terminology: “you snooze you lose”, “I’ll sleep once I’m dead”. There should be no trade-off between being committed and taking care of oneself, including making sure you are sleeping, eating well, practising mindfulness while still being amazing at work and accomplishing incredible things. In-fact, self-care is proven to increase business productivity.
