Burnout. It’s a word that has become all too common in leadership circles — particularly for women who juggle demanding careers with personal commitments.

You’re not alone if you’ve ever felt drained, unmotivated, or on the edge of exhaustion.

According to a 2023 Gallup study, nearly 44% of women leaders reported experiencing burnout symptoms, underscoring the urgency of this issue.

The good news? Burnout isn’t a dead end — it’s a signal that something needs to change.

Today, we’ll explore actionable strategies to counter burnout and rediscover the energy and passion that fuel exceptional leadership.

?

What Causes Burnout?

Burnout isn’t just about working too hard. It often stems from a combination of factors:

  • Unclear boundaries: When work spills into personal time, leaving no room to recharge.
  • Perfectionism: The relentless pursuit of flawlessness, which can drain mental and emotional energy.
  • Lack of alignment: Feeling disconnected from your values.

Strategies to Beat Burnout

  1. Set Non-Negotiable Boundaries Prioritize your well-being by carving out time for rest, hobbies, and relationships. Use tools like time-blocking to protect this space in your calendar.

Tip: Set a daily “shutdown ritual” to mark the end of your workday and transition to personal time.

  1. Reconnect with Your Purpose Burnout often signals a misalignment between what you do and what matters most to you. Revisit your career aspirations and identify how your current role supports — or sabotages — your long-term vision.
  2. Delegate and Empower As leaders, we often feel the need to do it all. Shift from a “doing” mindset to a “leading” mindset by delegating tasks to capable team members and empowering them to own their roles and responsibilities.
  3. Practice Active Self-Care Self-care is essential. No one else will take care of you like you can. Prioritize activities that replenish your energy — exercise, meditate, or say “no” to one more meeting.
  4. Seek Support Isolation exacerbates burnout. Build a trusted network of friends, mentors, peers, and coaches who can provide perspective, encouragement, and actionable advice.

A Client Story: From Burnout to Breakthrough

Lisa came to me exhausted and overwhelmed by her role as a senior executive. She felt like she was constantly spinning plates, with no time to focus on the strategic work she truly loved.

Together, we revisited her goals and values, creating a plan to delegate low-priority tasks and set firm boundaries around her personal time. Within a few months, Lisa felt reinvigorated and was able to bring fresh energy and ideas to her leadership team.

She shared, “Reclaiming my time and focus didn’t just change my career — it changed my life.”

Final Thought

Burnout isn’t a sign of weakness — it’s a signal that something needs to change.

You can reclaim your energy, focus, and joy by embracing small, intentional shifts in your habits and mindset. Remember, sustainable success doesn’t come from running on empty but from leading with resilience and intention.

As you take these steps, remind yourself that prioritizing your well-being is not just self-care; it’s leadership in action.

I am feeling burnout after 30 years since having my genitals removed due to vulva cancer and knowing others experiencing the same without a voice. I have lobbied since for an International Gynaecological Awareness Day September 10 campaign. I would truly value some support x Kath Mazzella OAM
