?? Manipur Violence: Headless corpse of 2-yr-old found in Manipur

The latest round of violence in Manipur has claimed at least 19 lives, including the destruction of homes, churches, and even a petrol pump.

  • Tensions remain high, with accusations against security forces for not intervening during attacks. Here’s a timeline of the events ??

November 7: A school teacher from the Hmar community was allegedly raped, shot in the leg, killed, and her body burned by suspected Meitei militants in Zairawn village.

  • Eyewitnesses claim the attack on Zairawn was conducted by about 100 armed Meitei men, destroying 19 houses and looting valuables.

November 8: A Meitei woman was allegedly shot and killed by suspected Kuki militants in Bishnupur district.

  • In subsequent days, suspected Kuki militants killed six Meitei family members, whose bodies including that of a two-year-old were later found in a river.?Meanwhile, Meitei groups allegedly set fire to five churches in Jiribam.

Hostages

November 11:?A CRPF personnel killed 10 suspected Kuki militants in Borobekra, Jiribam. Kuki organizations claim the deceased were “village volunteers,” not militants, and have demanded an investigation.

Politicians face the wrath: During the hostage crisis, violent protests led to attacks on the residences of 17 MLAs, including Chief Minister N Biren Singh , ministers, and BJP MLA R.K. Imo.

  • On November 17, agitators ransacked the homes of three state ministers and six legislators. Security forces used tear gas to disperse protesters.

Who is in power in Manipur now? The BJP remains in power in Manipur, holding a majority on its own. However, BJP’s key ally the National People’s Party (NPP) which has 7 MLAs in the assembly, has withdrawn its support, accusing Chief Minister N. Biren Singh of failing to manage the ongoing crisis and restore normalcy.

Security situation in Manipur: Union Home Minister Amit Shah cancelled Maharashtra election rallies to address the escalating violence.

  • A curfew was imposed across Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Thoubal, and Kakching districts.
  • The Ministry of Home Affairs deployed 20 additional companies of CAPF and ordered 50 more reinforcements, with units from the CRPF and BSF.

??11 newborn babies die in a hospital fire

The Uttar Pradesh government established a four-member committee to investigate the Jhansi hospital fire, suspected to be caused by an electrical short circuit .

  • The fire resulted in the deaths of 10 infants initially, with another succumbing later, leading to a total of 11 casualties.

What’s the cause? Preliminary investigations suggest the fire was accidental, triggered by a short circuit exacerbated by expired fire extinguishers .

  • A short circuit in the switchboard triggered the fire which escalated due to the lack of sprinklers in the pediatric ward, including the NICU.
  • Doctors stated sprinklers were avoided in the NICU to prevent risks to newborns.
  • One nurse suffered burns on her legs while attempting to extinguish the flames.
  • The fire rapidly spread towards an oxygen concentrator despite efforts by paramedical staff and two others using fire extinguishers.

  • A four-member committee has been established by the Uttar Pradesh government to investigate the incident, with a report expected in seven days.

Heart-wrenching tale: Yakoob Mansuri, a father from Jhansi, heroically saved seven infants from a fire at the Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College but tragically lost his twin daughters in the blaze .

  • When Yakoob could not enter the department where his twin daughters were placed, he started rescuing other infants.
  • Yakoob is now seeking justice for his daughters and the other victims, demanding accountability for the tragedy.

Did heads roll? No. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed a prompt report submission from the Jhansi Divisional Commissioner and other officials.

  • Deputy Chief Minister Brijesh Pathak refuted allegations about expired fire extinguishers, asserting that all firefighting equipment was operational.

Why this is sickening: In Dubai, an air ambulance descended to rescue a passenger in a bike accident causing an inconvenience and road closure for only 10-15 minutes. Contrast this to how a few days back, a pregnant woman and her family had a narrow escape when an oxygen cylinder in an ambulance exploded in Maharashtra, and how a Kerala driver was fined Rs.2.5 lakh for not giving way to an ambulance heading to Thrissur Medical College.
