Burn the bridges

Christian professionals encounter bridges connecting us to our past - patterns, attitudes, behaviours, habits and relationships that once defined us. These situations are invitations that attempt to lure us back into the vices we once left behind. To avoid getting into these prisons, we need to ‘Burn the bridges’.

"Burning the bridges" is an idiom that means taking an irreversible action, usually eliminating any possibility of returning to a previous state or situation. It implies making a decision that closes off all options to revert to the former situation, thereby committing fully to the chosen path, regardless of the potential risks or consequences. This idiom alludes to the military practice of burning bridges over rivers in order to prevent the enemy from crossing.

As believers, we must understand that we now have a new identity, we are born again, followers of our Lord Jesus. If we want his backing, blessing and anointing in our lives, we must live a set-apart, surrendered life. Just as Apostle Paul separated himself from his old life, we too must intentionally burn the bridges that lead back to sin. Disconnect from harmful influences, choose godly routes, and pray for breakthroughs.

We may fear that burning the bridges will close the benefits and opportunities that we used to enjoy, but we must know that our God is the Master of the Universe. He directs the hearts and minds of men. Remember in Luke 9:62 - "... Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God..."

This is evident by the converts in Ephesus as recorded in Acts 19:17-20: “Many of those who believed now came and openly confessed what they had done. A number who had practised sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas. In this way the word of the Lord spread widely and grew in power.”

Remember, eagles soar high, while ducks stay grounded. Burn the bridges that hold you back, and imbibe the upward journey of faith.
