celebrating a classic - with or without a spoon

The bunny cometh (with the best designed gift).

It’s never too early to get the crème eggs out in the supermarket. I personally love it when they have them on shelf on Boxing Day.

I’m yet to find anyone (sane) who doesn’t enjoy a creme egg. What’s not to like about a sticky fondant filling that looks like an actual egg but is in fact six teaspoons of sugar?

As many industry commentators would say, it’s also a design classic.

Why is that? Well like the Chocolate Orange before it, it follows a genius approach. Make it look like the item of food it represents. But more than that, it’s just simplicity personified. There is no packaging – no box – which for packaging experts must sting a little. But the real beauty is the inside – the actual contents of our crème egg are almost identical to the real thing (just not as good in an omelette or a fratatta).

It doesn’t need bedfellows on shelf. It stands proudly on it’s own. (Albeit, yes, you can buy them in packs and yes, once, there was even the Twisted now only found, I think, in a box of Heroes). One of my greatest disappointments in life was when McDonald’s made the crème egg McFlurry however – it just didn’t hit the spot (and I feel qualified to judge that as someone who doesn’t have a sweet tooth but has a whole set of sweet teeth).

It got me thinking about other chocolate design classics (I really do not need an excuse to dream of treats). Kit Kat. Yorkie. Bounty. Hey, for the international traveller, let’s do a shoutout to Toblerone (even though I can’t stand them).

But for me the humble crème egg remains champion with its trademark blue, purple and red foil. Over 500 million made every year in the UK. That’s an awful lot of busy chickens.
