Bundled or Unbundled?

Hi Friends,

It was the first Saturday in January 1982. And the routine was to go to the office with my dad. It was the day for physical inventory. Now, a junior in high school, I was expected to participate fully, having watched this exercise several times in the last year.

Things were going well, but I tripped and fell on a large box. The box was damaged badly. I called my dad over and showed him what had happened. I apologized and asked him what I should do. I listened and opened the box and found three smaller boxes. A Commodore computer, a floppy drive, and a twelve-inch green screen monitor.

I took the individual boxes and put them where other individual items were.

A couple of days later, at dinner, I learned a lesson. My dad asked me if I remembered Saturday, and I nodded my head. He said, “Mark, I think you just showed me something.”

I said, “What, Dad?”

“Mark, we sold the unbundled items for regular price, not the discount that Commodore sold it to us for.”

I didn’t quite understand, so I asked, “Dad, did we make more?”

He replied, “Yes, unbundled made us more, much more.

Many years later, as a recruiter in 2010, we were in the middle of a bad economy, and my clients reduced staff and saw this as an opportunity not to pay for search fees. Soon, I saw the number of searches dwindle. ?

It was time to get creative. I unbundled components of the recruiting process. I developed new services to keep them engaged until the economy stabilized.
