The Bullying Epidemic in Nursing: How to Stop It

Leaders play a vital role in creating a welcoming and supportive environment for new nurses, helping to prevent bullying before it starts. Here are three key strategies to set the tone:

  1. Connect Before They Start: A simple call or welcome message before their first day can significantly reduce anxiety. Let them know you’re excited to have them on the team and that support is always available.
  2. Celebrate Their First Day: Make their first day memorable with a welcome sign, introductions to the entire team, and a small celebration—food works wonders!
  3. Protect Them During Shift Report: Ensure experienced nurses show support, not criticism, during shift reports. Stand by your new nurses and set clear expectations for respectful communication.

By proactively welcoming and supporting new nurses, we can prevent bullying and foster a positive, inclusive culture from day one!
